Marc Patterson, MD, FRACP,

is Professor of Clinical Neurology and Clinical Pediatrics at Columbia University and the Director of Pediatric Neurology at The Neurological Institute of New York and Children's Hospital of New York

Dr Patterson was born and educated in Australia, where he graduated with First Class Honors from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Queensland (http://www.som.uq.edu.au/ ), before training in Medicine, Pediatrics and Neurology at the Royal Brisbane, Royal Children's and Royal Women's Hospitals in Brisbane. Subsequently, he completed further training in pediatrics and child neurology at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine , and a fellowship in neurometabolic diseases with Roscoe Brady at the National Institutes of Health.

On completion of training, Dr. Patterson joined the staff of Mayo Clinic and faculty of Mayo Medical School, where he was Consultant and Associate Professor in the Departments of Neurology, Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, and Medical Genetics, and Director of the Child Neurology Training Program prior to moving to New York on January 1, 2001.

Dr. Patterson's research has focused on neurometabolic disorders, including Gaucher
disease, Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation, and Niemann-Pick disease, Type C (NPC). Dr Patterson is currently the PI in a phase I/II study of OGT 918, an inhibitor of glycosphingolipid synthesis, in NPC, beginning in 2002.

The recipient of numerous awards, including the Charles Mitford Lilley Prize (surgery) from the
University of Queensland, the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists Prize and a Fulbright Award, Dr. Patterson is a frequent national and international lecturer, and contributor to the literature on children's neurometabolic disorders. Dr Patterson is married to Robin, a Psychiatrist, and has twin daughters and a son. He also supports two horses (see HERE for the neurological connection of one of these: five cats and a miniature dachshund, under instructions from his animal loving family
