Arkansas Gastroenterology Consultants

Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the subspecialty of internal medicine that deals with the health of the digestive system. The gastroenterologist is specially trained in a three year residency in internal medicine, followed by a two or three year fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology (liver disease). Physicians who complete approved training may become board certified in internal medicine, and subsequently in gastroenterology. Board certification is a standard which distinguishes outstanding achievement in a medical field. Additionally, continuing to update knowledge through additional specialized training and professional meetings is essential.

We require continuing education and board certification of all our staff members. We feel this is imperative to insure that our patients receive the finest quality care.

Patient Evaluation

A complete gastrointestinal evaluation initially includes a thorough interview and physical exam, followed by appropriate endoscopy (examination of the bowel), X-rays, urine and blood tests, etc. A copy of the results of your endoscopy, as well as a summary of other pertinent findings, will be sent to your primary care doctor to help insure continuity of care.

The types of treatment typically performed during endoscopy include removal of abnormal growths (such as colon polyps), biopsy (tissue samples) of abnormal areas, dilation of narrowed areas, and control of sites which are bleeding, or appear likely to bleed (such as an ulcer). Patients generally sleep through endoscopy, and usually have no memory of the test when it is over. You will be provided with specifics about the tests you will need in your evaluation and treatment.

If you require referral to another physician (surgeon, internist, etc.), we will arrange this in concert with your primary care provider.
