Children will Test Rules.

If you offer a child two yeses and she ignores them, you may use a
consequence. A consequence is something that happens when she breaks the
rule. Decide ahead of time what you will do if she ignores you again. Plan a
consequence.

The consequence can be "natural" or "logical"
Natural consequences happen without you doing anything. Logical consequences
need an adult to do something. For example, Tony runs out in the snow
without shoes. Natural consequence-Tony gets cold feet. Logical
consequence-Tony's mom carry him back inside.
What is the difference between a threat and a consequence?
A Threat - Intends to frighten into obedience rather than offer a real
choice. It hurst or punishes, and lowers self esteem. The tone of voice is
critical, and the threat may not be carried out.
A consequence - Intends to guide or teach. The tone of voice is calm and
factual. It offers true choices, and it will be carried out.

Four rules for a good logical consequence. A consequence is a real choice,
is related to the child's behavior, is gently firm, and is something you
will follow through with.
What can I use for consequence?
1. Lose priviledge - "You can drive the truck on the floor or play with
something else" If he bangs it on the window, take the truck away. He loses
the priviledge of playing with the truck.
2. Re-do it Right - "Wash your hands well or I will watch you" If her
hands are dirty for lunch, go with her to the sink and watch her do it
right. Eventually she will find it is easier to do it right the first time.
3. Do a kindness - "Watch where you are going or rebuild the tower of
blocks" If Jess knocks down his sister's blocks, he must rebuild them and do
something nice to her.
