Doulas are professional women (usually) who offer emotional support, physical comfort measures, information, counseling and hands-on coaching to couples and their families during the childbearing cycle.
We
assist couples during early labor by offering in-home labor sitting, active
birth coaching, birth, and postpartum care in the home for mothers of multiples
and for mothers who have undergone cesarean section surgery. We assist
with bonding, breast-feeding techniques, and assist mothers during pregnancy
by offering childbirth education and putting you and your family in touch
with appropriate community resources. I cover within a 2 hour radius the Elk Grove and Sacramento areas.
Midwives
are trained to offer prental care, counseling, labor birth and postpartum
care most often in the home setting. They are considered by the World
Health Organization to be "experts" on normal birth. Many midwives
are well-versed in water birthing and and natural childbirth methods. A
few nurse-midwives practicing in hospital settings might be able to offer
you these alternatives, as well.
