FOR 37 YEARS the Sword of Hope has been the registered trade-mark and symbol of the American Cancer Society, the only voluntary health organization fighting cancer on the broad fronts of research, education and service.  This sword originated out of a nation-wide poster contest in 1928.  The blade expresses the crusading spirit of the cancer control movement and the twin-serpent hilt emphasizes the scientific and medical aspects.

One of the big hopes in the crusade against cancer is research.  From 1937 through 1964 the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute, major supporters of cancer research, have devoted approximately $900 million to this work.  As of September 1, 1964 the Society had 395 research project grants in effect that were aimed at finding answers in the areas of cause, course and treatment.  The Society also sponsors the "Cancer Prevention Study", the most extensive medical statistical research project ever undertaken.  This enormous study, continuing for seven years, is made possible by volunteers.  Without their help it would be financially impossible.

The purpose of this stamp is to remind everyone of the importance of early diagnosis and also to salute the many people who contribute time and money to this worthy cause.
