JUNE, 2001

"The fruit of the righteous
is a tree of life."
~~Proverbs 11:30

June 1, 2001 - Rain, beautiful soft and gentle rain - falling outside for most of the day. There was no work outdoors since the rain was at work. The boys goofed up yesterday and failed to lock up the building or turn off the lights. Allan was most unhappy when he came by this morning to find the door open and the lights on. I sent the boys out to collect the tools yesterday and put them up. Some tools were over looked and left out in the weather which was another blunder on their part.

My grandsons are growing up. They have slept downstairs the last two nights here. I made the stipulation that they had to keep it straight and not tear up anything. Lady went down yesterday and checked things out and they passed the test. Today, Wes was chosen to check out the basement and make sure all was well. Again, the boys passed their test.

All three boys had to give me their dirty clothes this morning to be washed up before we could leave for Hickory to meet Tbird and pick up Giggles. Warm clothes straight from the dryer donned quickly, we were a little late getting down the highway. Of all days, we had to stop for a train which seldom happens. The boys were not on their best behavior as we rode down the rode and I had to call them down several times for cutting up. With the rainy day, heavy Friday traffic and my eyes not working as well as they used to, I was not a happy camper having to deal with them and drive defensively - and safely! We did make the trip safely.

After a quick lunch with Tbird, I was off to Lenoir with four children belted in to take care of several items of business. The boys went into Wally World and got Mother some candy for her CNAs and again followed my rule well. I had to get my medicines from the drugstore and then NascarKid went into the City Office to pay my water bill for me instead of me mailing it in late again. A quick trip by the nursing center to drop off the candy and I sat in the car with Giggles sent she was sleeping. Home again for about four hours together before all the grandchildren were ushered off in the direction of their own homes.

MY time has arrived! I’m too tired to take advantage of it and do very much. The on-line classes are caught up, e-mail checked and now I can only hope that sleep will come tonight. I didn’t get any rest today, so how am I suppose to face the oncoming night? I wish to sleep. I want to sleep. I desire to sleep. I need to sleep. Now to see how the night progresses.

June 2, 2001 - Progress it did and the morn arrived with sunshine and quietude. I choose not to gander a guess of whether I slept or not. I know that I meandered among the nooks and crannies of my brain and searched out some of the past along the way. Some dreams of that mystery land that dwells within crept into view along the way Will any of it come to life and show itself? Where did it ever come from? T’would be a treat (Or maybe not!) to venture into that land sometime for real and understand what it all means. Oh, well, the night passed as always it does...

‘Fess up time for me. I was outside with the boys and I did watch and offer suggestions and commands. There were a few times I might have pitched in and done a little of the work. (I’ll never tell all for sure.) Overall, I was dragging my nice comfy plastic yard chair around all over the place and plopping down on it many times throughout the past few days. I was a nice person and listened to my son’s advice when he told me the other day how proud he was of how I am getting around now. His words of wisdom were, “Just don’t go and get too confident! That’s when you end up getting hurt! We don’t want to have to come and pick you up with a broken hip or something sometime because you did something you should not be doing.” Well ... how do I know what I can do if I don’t at least try?

Alone in my corner; in my own little world - away from all that swirls around outside. At times it would be nice to be a part of something that would share, love and comfort, as well as communicate back and forth as time goes by. Dogs are nice to have around and they do keep you some company, but there is much they cannot fulfill as a companion or soulmate. They are more of a child to be tended and loved, but that love back in their own small way. Much from my past makes me wonder, “What if ...” Things seem to happen for a reason and why something may or may not have worked out for me throughout my lifetime may be mourned and longed for, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will come back again.

And in the evening
After the fire and the light
One thing is certain:
Nothing can hold back the night
Time is relentless
And as the past disappears
We’re on the verge of all things new.
~~Billy Joel

Two hours were spent this morning relaxing and listening to the two CDs of BILLY JOEL, 2000 Years - The Millennium Concert ... Which Tbird gave me for Mother's Day.

Many of his songs have such a special message within them. All songs have some sort of message, but his has words and music which seem to speak to me. Some songs touch on history as his story unfolds. Many of the songs I heard this morning were different from the ones he sang in the concert in Charlotte. In fact, I’m not sure I had heard a few of them. At any rate, the pups and me shall listen again - and again. I have other CDs and cassettes of his works, as well. His life if out in the public as much so as mine is private. I shall continue to tap my foot and keep the beat of his music as I listen.

Morning is over, Things are to be done. At the head of the list is spending some time with Mother. Guess I best get a move on and do something with the rest of the day. Relaxation time is officially over.
Brother and his wife came in to spend some time with Mother as I was preparing to leave. Their son came along with them today and had his two daughters with him. It has been a while since I’ve seen the children and surprising how much they have grown. His wife had finished another year teaching and had taken off for the beach to celebrate getting out for the summer. She celebrated her first night at the beach by going to bed at 7:30!

June 3, 2001 - This happened to be a Red Letter Day Sunday in a sad sort of way. I proceeded down the highway thirty-five minutes later than usual since there would be no breakfast before church. Traffic was really edgy as drivers were first speeding up and then suddenly slowing back within the speed limit as they saw the patrol cars. The speed control was set on my car and there was no need for the braking and speeding back and forth. We all seemed to reach the same point in Hickory about the same time. Luckily, there was someone sitting on the bench where I usually sit in church and I was not alone as the service began.

A message came back from our new pastor who had gone to Ohio for his oldest daughter’s graduation from High School. Seems a serious illness had spread through the community and schools in the town. Many were in the hospitals and three high schoolers had died during the week. The best friend of his daughter died on Saturday. His whole family had to have shots to keep down the chances of their catching it, but all seemed to be fine. Graduation was called off because of the epidemic. On top of that his middle daughter is scheduled for surgery next week. Wife and two older daughters are remaining in Ohio and he is returning to Hickory with his youngest. Such a difficult time for him and his family.

On the lighter side: the church swimming pool is ready to open on schedule. However, it can not be opened. It had passed tests, but the county has a new rule put in effect this year. Even though the state tests the well water on a regular basis and it has passed every test is of no relevance. The pool water itself has passed of tests and is ready for use. The new rule? The county has to send out its own person to check the well water! It doesn’t trust the state’s work so it would appear. The reports of the water in the pool itself doesn’t count either. Strange rule to make -one would have to think ...

I treated myself to a lemon-berry float for lunch to day. It had a wedge of lemon and some fresh strawberries mixed in which made a delightful tasting refreshment to sip on. No, it won’t be an every Sunday affair for me. I’ll not buy one each week.

BingoKid came over to spend some time (tonight and tomorrow) with me and we took off to visit with Mother for a while after Wes and the rest of his family left. She had a plate of food sitting beside her that looked more like slop than food. Some kind of beef and “noodles” that must have been over cooked into a mush beside of mixed vegetables that looked no better. All she had eaten was the small slice of watermelon that fit on a saucer. The CNA that came in to pick up the tray agreed that she wouldn’t eat it either. I offered to go out and get her a sandwich, but all she wanted was some more watermelon.

We drove up town and bought some more candy for her and some birdseed at Wally World and some watermelon from the grocery store. A quick trip back to the center to deliver our goodies and then we both were ready to head home leaving her pleased with the watermelon, filled birdfeeders and candy for her helpers.

June 4, 2001 - Yes! The pool was back in use today. sixteen of us were there to do our weekly workout. All of us missed not getting to come last week. The only drawback was the odor of the water used to refill the pool. It just happened to come out of the same lake that our drinking water comes from and has the effects of the same mold and algae - in other words - the water stinks!

I trudged into Q4L with four additions this morning. BingoKid had spent the night with me. Dad brought over Giggles, DynoKid and NascarKid to spend the day with me. BingoKid being a member was able to go into the pool while we were there. Giggles and DynoKid went into Daycare. Being that NascarKid had not being getting along with brother or others too well lately, I didn’t chance leaving him in the Day Care to cause a problem. He sat out in the lobby to ready his book and munch on cereal by himself.

Once back home, the boys proved to be a handful today. I couldn’t get outside to work with them as they gathered more stones for the patio. They would not work alone. The name of the game turned into Who Can Lock Who Out of the House? The older boys took my spare car key and would call me from my cell phone to inform me they were locked out a time or two. Meanwhile, DynoKid would run around the house banging on all the doors wanting them to let him back inside. Giggles was awakened from her nap by the banging to get back indoors.

Because of a guilt trip, they broke in and decided to clean up downstairs by taking the vacuum cleaner and working. That makes me wonder what they may have done before that. No stones were moved. Some more fussing among them before time to go home and I was more than ready for them to leave this day. Just think, tomorrow and I will be riding up the mountain with Tbird and her three as she goes back to get her jaundice rechecked. She is gradually turning back from the yellow hue she has been for two weeks, but her stamina is next to nil.
