OCTOBER, 2001

"The poet’s voice need not merely be the record of man;
it can be one of the props,
the pillars to help him endure and prevail."
~~William Faulkner (1897-1962)

October 1, 2001 - YIKES! Double YIKES! Even Triple YIKES!!!

October is already here. I’m not ready to take on that official title of “Over-The-Hill-Now”. However, at weeks’ end I will be that official looking age of - do I dare even write it? - GUESS SO.... 65! Ah, that was the quick way of doing it. That makes it look more like a speed limit instead of an age. I can drive that fast with no problems when on the Interstate roadways... Why not drive through life with the same gusto...

I made it back to the water this morning and got a bigger workout than I bargained for. We had the instructor that does things double time and I think I have to keep up with her. By the end of the hour, I knew there would be some soreness. Some cramps and spasms were already sending out alerts. I had to back off some before the end of the hour. But, the important thing - I made it!!! Of course, all recognized immediately that my voice is far from normal and then I had to up and cough a few times while working out.... That will get better.

The rest of my day was quite laid back and aloof. Brother called that he was visiting with Mother and had brought her some of her favorite ice cream. That was just what I needed to hear, and so ... I turned over on the bed to rest for the remainder of the day. The mail can wait until tomorrow.

October 2, 2001 - Getting back into the routine is a mite hard to do. Especially, when one needs to get up earlier to get to the new morning class. It has officially been named the Water Waves Class. I sort of like that name. It leads one to think of more than just working out in the water. We could even begin to think in terms of doing some actual synchronized steps along the way. We have the right instructor for doing that inasmuch as she does some square dancing in the water with us at times ... and other dance moves ... yoga ... karate .. aqua zin ... the list goes on. We need only put it all together. Bet we would look quite spiffy.

I picked up my neighbor up the road this morning since her hubby had to use her car and she doesn’t care to drive a straight drive truck. Little did she know that I would not return home until lunchtime. Of course, I didn’t know that fact either. We decided to stay and do the second class in the water. I had to slow down at the end of it. I’m way out of shape as to where I would prefer to be since being out for a whole week. That means more soreness in different muscles today.

Allie had posted a note for anyone interested to sign up for the Red Hat Society Meeting today. Only one signed up and the girl at the desk at Quest had lost the list. We had no idea who had signed up. Allie was very discouraged last night while we talked over the phone about the lack of interest, but upon looking at the situation - there was only one sign posted in the locker room and few people saw it. I was out last week and Allie had company last week and was also out. We had no chance to past the word around about today’s meeting. She decided to go do something elsewhere since only one had signed up. I placed my hat in the car and wore a purple shirt - just in case.

Turns out that six of us were there to sit and talk together! Allie really missed out, because Ms. Jay had made a Birthday Cake for Allie and me. She brought along ice cream and ice tea for all of us and had all the cups, plates, napkins and ice for our enjoyment. The meeting turned out to be a good time for all of us in attendance. We sat around the table and talked and talked and talked... Ms. Jay baked a wonderful cake to nibble on as we talk...

After resting awhile, I have to get myself motivated once more to get up and going. Mother has not called, but I know that she expects me to show up today to spend some time with her. I want to go by the copier place and get some copies of my new quilt patterns made. As of now they are in two and three pieces and have to be fitted together. That is not an easy way to work with appliquéing. And I could stand to buy me some more bananas since BingoKid got carried away eating all those Sunday night. Mother is running low on candy for the staff ... the list goes on and on.

Tbird called yesterday all excited. An article about her trip to New York City work was on the Internet and she wanted me to see it. I found that the actual article was so small I copied and pasted it to my email in order to make it large enough to read easier.(I could have pasted it in the notebook just as easy.) Guess that’s a sign that perhaps I am growing older. My eyes are not working up to par as they once did.

Now that you've read the article you know why the "T" is put with Bird for her nickname...
It’s turning out to be a busy week once again.

October 3, 2001 - Twas a bright and sunny Wednesday morn, everything was off to a good start. Up early to do some straightening up of a few things and collecting the Sunday newspapers I only looked at last night and tossed toward the basket. The plan was made and I was going to do it. Well, try it I did! But, do it? I had another thought coming once I began.

I left early to join the beginner’s yoga class which was to last only a half hour. Well ... I barely lasted part of twenty minutes. A very torturous twenty minutes at that. Yoga has been labeled the one exercise/meditation that everybody can do. Correction!! Not quite everyone. As much as I would love to do it, my feet and lower legs would not allow me to perform the movements. The pain of attempting the moves brought big whelps of sweat all over me. Finally, when the moves turned to the left and my right hip and back sprang a pain, a sick feeling flowed through me and I knew it was time to quit. Later in the water class, both knees cramped on me and I had to stop exercising for the day. Look out nighttime.... That’s when problems crop up again. Such a way to be reminded that there are things still out of my realm of abilities...

It’s just one of those days. Just one of those awful days when all goes wrong as things sometime do. My refrigerator decided to stop cooling as it should. Allan called the repairman for me but we are not certain when he will appear to work his wonders for me. I may have to miss my exercise class in the morning since Allan works EMS Thursday. Meanwhile, all the refrigerator was emptied and the savables were carried downstairs to the other refrigerator for safe storage. There was room for the frozen side to be stored in the large freezer. At least all was cleaned out and the older stuff tossed since it was long past due its keeping date. Now to get it washed out and sparkling before time to restock the items. I had just cleaned out the refrigerator side recently and now to do it again!

During a brief visit by Ms. Jay, Oreo seemed to turn too quickly or something and let out a yelp of pain. He ran around trying to get away from the pain and looking for a comfortable place to rest. Allan checked him out for me and decided he didn’t have a dislocation or break or something in his paw. He thought I needed to take him to the Vet. No! Surely not! I waited a while to see how Oreo got along. After watching him nearly two hours as he kept changing from one spot to another and softly whining along with his long tongue panting so hard he had moisture tossed back over his head, I called the Vet. That was not on my schedule for the day - or the month - or even, the year. After an x-ray to rule out a hip or joint problem, we were given a week’s worth of pain pills and instructed to allow him to rest a lot. In all likelihood, he had some pressure on a disc in his back and rest was the best treatment. Paying $64 at the desk, I was ready to bring Oreo back home to rest along with the caution if he didn’t get along well to bring him back immediately.

The working day is almost over and no workman to repair the refrigerator. Mother has called several times wanting me to come over. She forgets that I have to hang out at home waiting for the unknown... Besides, my knees are in rebellion ...
