Liverpool News & Reports(98/99 season)

Backdated Liverpool News and Reports, Comments and Reviews on some matches would also be placed here. It's not really good, but it's my opinion.

Manchester's Form Or Non Form?
Well, I feel I have to write this or rather quote some parts of it from the papers. I agree with it fully and I figured that Non Manchester people would relish this article. It's also for those pro Manchester fans to read but then again they'll probably come up with lots of "statements" to disagree with what the journalist have written. "Success in English football tends to come in cycles." I too have always said that, but sadly, Manchester fans do not agree with me. Expected of them eh? But that holds a lot of truth, after all, why did Newton's law come about? What goes up must come down. Thing is when is it going down. Okie so Manchester United fans would probably come after me for saying that. No need for you all to do that. I being the wonderfully impartial writer would quote what the journalist have to say (All these would be highlighted in blue.) cause it gives you a view of what other people think, not just what Liverpool fans think.

"The domestic part of the treble, the League and Cup double, is probably easier now than at any time before the 90s. While United fans will argue that it only shows the quality of their side in the '90s, the more accurate assessment is that the English club scene is now more concentrated in the hands of the few like never before, split mainly along the lines of haves and the have-nots. This was less so in the '70s and '80s, when many not necessarily wealthy sides, including the likes of Watford, had a fair crack at the championship. And while the field of challengers was wider, it also had more depth. (For those who don't understand this, it refers to the teams in the '70s and '80s. And Manchester fans, it does NOT mean that your team is superior, if you read it in such a way, sadly, you don't know what the journalist have to say. It means that there are not enough challengers with more depth to provide competition to Manchester at the moment. Which means that Manchester is too overrated a team.) When Liverpool was in its ascendancy, for example, its rivals each season included the likes of Forest, which also happened to win both the European Cup and the League Cup twice in that period; Aston Villa, which won the European Cup; Bobby Robson's hugely unlucky Ipswich Town(second twice and third twice, plus UEFA CUP winners); not to mention Howard Kendall's Everton and Manchester United itself. United's period of dominance, on the other hand, has been marked by the great underachievement in Europe both on its part and even more so on that of its challengers Blackburn, Newcastle, Leeds and Arsenal.

Liverpool have in fact won a treble of League, League Cup and European Cup(in 1984), a trio Nottingham Forest came close to winning in 1979 while Everton in 1985."

The writer (that is the above that is written in blue only) is a Sydney based journalist who supports neither Liverpool nor Manchester United.

So, Manchester United fans, be less arrogant.

Honestly, i respect some of the players' skills, but there's one thing i have to remember, that is the players come with the skills and fans......and there is not way for me to separate any of it. So...........And one thing, they are not the only players in the League who are capable. Other teams have capable players too. So stop putting down other players or teams. Players like Marc Overmars ave got the skill and speed of Giggs or even better. Graeme Le Saux's crosses are just as nice as Beckham's, even better. Anyway, remember Newton's law eh, that's all I have to say.

News or rumours about transfers? We'll see..........
McAteer has paved the way for more exits out of Liverpool, with Houllier promising more new faces for the Liverpool squad.
Rob Jones might just be leaving for West Ham. But it won't be so soon because should anything happen to Vegard Heggem(touch wood!), Jones would be the perfect cover. Otherwise, they would have to bring in Bjorn Tore Kvarme.
Sean Dundee and Karlheinz Riedle, are likely to be replaced by Eric Meijer and Jari Litmanen.By the way, it seems that it is Litmanen's 'dream' to play for Liverpool. So he looks to be coming to Liverpool eh?
Brad Friedel is having work permit problems which mean that a new keeper is to be sought. Gerard Houllier's had Stefan Postma on trial, and 19 year old Norwegian Espen Johnsen is currently tested.
Bjorn Tore Kvarme, Danny Murphy, Dominic Matteo and Oyvind Leonhardsen are likely to be leaving. Also, Liverpool's fourth choice keeper Jorgen Nielsen might just be leaving.
Liverpool are also expected to make a move for 26 year old Lens' captain Frederic Dehu in the summer.
Another Liverpool target:defender,Olexandr Hilovko (Dynamo Kiev) and striker Wagneau Eloi (lens)

True!
Czech Vladimir Smicer deal. Would be replacing Macca's position. Samy Hyppia signed from Willem. Titi Camara coming too. So looks like it's gonna be United Nations at Anfield.
29 year old Dutch striker Eric Meijer has agreed a three year deal at Anfield worth some £15,000 a week. He will arrive on a free transfer in the summer.
Eric Meijer a striker of Bayer Leverkusen, is expected to sign a pre-contract agreement at Anfield next week. Jari Litmanen may perhaps do the same.
Brad Friedel, Karlheinz Riedle and Sean Dundee are said to be looking out for new clubs.
Norwegian goalie Espen Johnsen will be invited back for another week's trial.
West Ham has confirmed that they are 'a long way' from signing Rob Jones. Though desperate to sign the 27 year old full back, manager Redknapp might just wait till the summer when Jones is out of contract at Anfield.

Charlton Vs Liverpool (13 Feb)
It was a lackluster performance from Liverpool. It was the worst! It’s so bad! (you can say that again, 1 million times!) I was kinda surprised why Houllier fielded Staunton instead of Song. Afterall, Staunton is supposed to be injured (what with pulling out from the Irish squad). And although Song be not be 100% fit, I feel that he should be fielded instead of Staunton. Bjornebye is another player who should not be on the pitch. But who else is there? I still think McAteer should not be sold! Consider: McAteer is better than Bjornebye. But people are always saying that McAteer’s crap etc………

Anyway, about the match. The first half was dominated by (as with the second half) Charlton and they missed loads of chances. The only decent chance Liverpool had was a Macca try which was cleared by the Charlton keeper. Other than that, Liverpool never threatened Charlton. Bjornebye always fouled the opponents (or so the referee thinks.) and free kicks are always given in favour of Charlton. I think it’s pretty unfair, considering the fact that many a time, Charlton players blocked the path of the Liverpool players, tugged at their shirts, held them back etc and were they fouled? Apparently, no. The referee was clearly giving Charlton the advantage (a 90% to 10% advantage).

The first few minutes of the second half was rather heartening to watch because you actually see Liverpool pushing forward. But that lasted just a few minutes and nothing more. I was actually thinking to myself that Houllier is not bad of a tactician eh. But I was wrong……….the second half was horrible, just as bad as the first. If not worst (afterall, there was a goal scored in this half.). Carragher’s sending off was the turning point for both teams. It was a really harsh decision to send him off for a foul on Pringle. (I dislike Pringle (what kind of a name is that? Like eat your Pringles when crispy? Store your Pringles under 20C?Duh!) He’s that guy who kept on threatening Liverpool’s defence. From what I heard, I think he’s on loan from Benfica? (No wonder I found him familiar! I think I saw that guy play when he was with Benfica. Anyway, I dislike him.)

After being down to 10 men, Liverpool couldn’t keep up with the pressure. A bad bad bad mistake by Staunton resulted in a goal for Charlton (which should not have happened.) Staunton actually kicked the goal towards his own goal post. It was the quick-thinking and quick reflex (at that moment) James who managed to block that shot to prevent Staunton from scoring an own goal. But all James could manage was to hit the ball to a Charlton player. And thus, this ends the story………….

Liverpool were like an inferior team playing against Charlton. They were playing like schoolboys. Ok, probably it’s because of the mid-week friendlies that make them tired. But hey, they are professionals, and all they ever do is play soccer, it shouldn’t be an excuse. Whether or not they play an extra match in mid-week is not a good reason for their horrible performance. Maybe they were tired with too much pacing to and fro on the catwalk! Perhaps Liverpool should stop all this catwalking business. Stop their players from doing that. This catwalking thing has earned Liverpool the nickname of Spice Boys (all of you should know.) and please note that it is not nice to be called Spice Boys. I can never understand why some fans feel proud to call Liverpool players as the Spice Boys. You know why people call Liverpool players Spice Boys? That’s cause ,like the Spice Girls, they’ve got no talent, and all they have is looks (No offence to Spice Girls. But that’s what people think and hence gave a similar name to Liverpool players.) But unlike the Spice Girls who have won lots of awards (Read: Brit awards etc…) , the Spice Boys have won none. So?…..what does it point to?

Another excuse, the referee. Perhaps this isn’t so much an excuse. It’s the truth. The referee was clearly giving Charlton the advantage (If I’m not wrong, I think I heard the commentator saying that the referee is one of the strictest? Apparently no? Except the Carragher incident where he was way harsh. There were many a time that a Charlton player got away with what seemed like a foul on Liverpool players. The referee always see Bjornebye as fouling the opponents (I come to the conclusion that the referee probably hates Bjornebye’s face or what so ever. Ha!)

Criticisms:
James: He had an ok game. But Staunton’s mistake…….
Heggam: Like where’s this guy? Is he playing or is he not? He was not the Heggam we have seen in the Man Utd match, the one who managed to outpace Giggs. Today’s Heggam did not make those runs upfront. Neither was there a show of fancy footwork, running circles around opponents.
Bjornebye: His crosses whatever is really horrible. He should not be fielded in the first place.
Staunton: He made loads of mistakes. And one of his many mistakes cost Liverpool 3 points.
Matteo & Carragher: They were playing pretty ok. Carragher is better though but his sent off threw Liverpool into confusion.
Redknapp: His crosses and free kicks were pretty decent. But horrible passing! The worst! And he kept slipping.
Ince: Where’s his fighting spirit?
McManaman: Is this the Macca we have seen playing a few seasons? Where’s that wonderful runs along the flanks? Where’s that ability to run circles around opponents.
Owen: Was Owen on the pitch? He’s having an off-day? So he’s not playing? Gee I didn’t realise he was playing.
Fowler: The better of the whole squad. He doubles up as…….whatever position there is in the pitch. He was the defender, striker, midfielder. He was the most hardworking player. But it wasn’t of use cause after getting possession of the ball, he would pass it to his team mates who would subsequently lose it.

I feel the urge the rate the players:
James(5), Heggam(3), Bjornebye(3), Staunton(3), Carragher(5), Matteo(4), Redknapp(3), Ince(3), McManaman(4), Owen(3), Fowler(5)
Song, Gerrand and Riedle would not be rated as they came on for only about 10 mins of the game. It would be unfair to rate them.

Point to Note:
We missed Berger’s hardworkingness. The guy who would go all out to win possession of the ball if ever he lost it or others lost it. There was no such player in the game against Charlton.
Song should be fielded at the beginning. Had he not intervened, Charlton would have been 2 up.
Carragher has improved since Xmas. He’s the one who marshals Liverpool’s defence now. He’s one of the younger players and look like he surpass the older and more experienced players.
Redknapp might just have to leave. It is rumoured that Ince would leave at the end of the season.
Other Sub-Points:
It was a crap game. But I wouldn’t call the players losers (like this Liverpool fan did on tv). What would it make of us then? Losers supporting losers? What that Liverpool fan said was horrible too. You call that a Liverpool fan? You may criticize them but not call them losers. Point to note: This is the first time I have made such heavy criticisms.
As if having a boring and crap game was not enough. The quality of the live telecast was equally bad. I had the screen like stuck for a couple of minutes and at one point, it happened to be stuck every one min of 5 mins with a message saying defects are inherent from source.

Macmanaman's departure.........(1 Feb)
News of Macmanaman's move to Real Madrid has saddened many Liverpool fan who have started calling him unloyal (i am one of them initially. If you read what i have written earlier.) and a  traitor( i really see no reason why he should be called a traitor, althought i've seen lots of people calling him that!) We Liverpool fans had hoped that he would stay on to help Liverpool make the next season their season. But sadly, he decided to leave. I think it is time we stop giving Macca the stick for leaving Liverpool.
HE'S GOT A LIFE, HE'S GOT DREAMS.It's been his dream to play overseas ever since. Shouldn't we support him then? He had been playing for Liverpool almost all his life (rather 9 years. but a soccer player's lifespan on the field is a pretty short one.) and he had done Liverpool proud. Also, this stint abroad would fulfill his dreams as well as to broaden his experience. If ever he does well overseas. Liverpool can certainly be proud of him because he is afterall a product of Liverpool Youth System. As Liverpool fans, we should support him and stop making him feel bad about leaving Liverpool. (we should never boo him like what fans of other teams did to their ex players! ahem, no hint intended. :) )Let's wish Macca all the best, You'll never walk alone!

FA Match Review:(ManUtd Vs Liverpool)(24 Jan)
Liverpool did well! The finest they have ever played against a team, especially Man utd. But what a pity, the match that had seemed to be going their way turned in favour of Man Utd. It's so unfair! Liverpool, at least deserved a replay at anfield! I have never ever seen Liverpool defended so well before! If they were to play that well in the league, i think they would certainly have a chance to be in the top 5, even the top 3(that is if they manage to exploit the other teams dip in form to climb up the rankings) Anyway, back to the game..........
Owen's goal in the 3rd min, a little too early i should say.......left Liverpool playing defensively (not so in the first half but more in the second half). But they were playing too deep at times. And Man utd kept pressing forward. But Liverpool's defenders manage to keep out the pressure and the goals, rather well, i should say. But Man Utd did have their misses (counting those that hit the post only). Man utd were looking for desperate especially when the liverpool defenders of Jamie Carragher and Matteo manage to keep out the deadly force of Cole and Yorke. They did a tremendously job against  man utd (with the exception of the last few minutes.) What a pity 'cause they manage to hold on for 80 odd minutes and in the last 2 minutes, conceded 2 goals. (I'm right afterall, saying that they are always so disorganized and unconcentrated in the last 5 minutes of each half.) Liverpool were playing like a team in the first half (this is what we fans want to see), they defended well, passed well and held possession in the first half. But all these were wiped out in the second half. Like i've said countless times, Ferguson's a great tactician and it would do the opponent well if he came up with different tactics in the second half to counter ferguson's subs and whatever. (okie i'm getting tired writing this now.......) But even with the lost, i think we fans can be glad that Liverpool are beginning to look like a team, to seem as if they do indeed have a chance now in being in the top 3-5.

Okie i'm tired writing long sentences, so i'll just write out the points. These points are written without considering the faults made in the last few minutes!
* HAIL VEGARD HEGGAM as Liverpool's own Ryan Giggs. (NOT that he is the next ryan giggs. HE IS A PERSON IN HIS OWN RIGHT, COMPARABLBLE TO giggs , if not BETTER! i am talking about him making those runs upfront.)
* HAIL JAMIE CARRAGHER (do you notice him playing better since that Xmas day party? (or is it just me thinking so? hm......)
*HAIL BERGER. Thank god, he didn't leave Liverpool. He's having his best season in Liverpool ever! The most hardworking playing i should think.
*HAIL LIVERPOOL. They are indeed playing as and like a team.

News:(20 Jan)
They are selling Rob Jones to West Ham. The injury-plagued Liverpool right back will collect a staggering £1.1million-a- year package from the Hammers.(Cool or what?) But Liverpool would only be getting £200,000 instead for the £3m a year ago. (Apparently, the whole Redknapp family's involved.)Jones' terms were partly hammered out by his advisor Mark Redknapp, the West Ham manager's son. Jones was also recommended to the Hammers by Mark's brother Jamie, the Liverpool midfielder.Anyway, both Arsenal and Rangers inquired about the full-back yesterday, but with the Redknapp connection West Ham should still win the race.

Question?(20 Jan)
Why are they selling McAteer? Can you imagine? Blackburn Rovers want Liverpool to pay Jason McAteer £1m to leave Anfield. Pay someone so loyal to leave? I think that McAteer's been playing rather okie. Getting back to his former self, playing well. But he's not in Houllier's Plans? DON'T SELL MCATEER!!!!!!!!!! (okie so he's one of my fav but DON'T SELL HIM!!!!!!!!)

Arsenal Vs Liverpool (9 Jan)
The better defence in the league against the better strike force. What do we expect??!!! Judging from this match, we all can see that Liverpool is improving (or so they seem. They better!). They dominated the first half of the match (which was heartening to see) but then we have to note that Dennis Berkamp was not playing, Marc Overmas was below par, Steve Bould had to leave early in the match (due to injury) which probably disrupted Arsenal's play. But Liverpool played well too (got to give them some credit). Heggam did well on many occasions to prevent Marc Overmars from making those dangerous runs upfront. He kept Overmars out of the game in the first half, but then again, overmars has not fully recovered from his injury. Berger did well too. Actually, i think that it is Berger who contributed the most this season, thought he didn't score much goals, he was there, giving all he had, battling for the ball etc. Jamie Carragher and Steve Staunton had a pretty good game in the first half. They read the game well, intercepted passes. Also Liverpool's passing in midfield is so much better than previous games. The only thing is that Fowler and Owen kept falling down. There were times when the Arsenal Player fouled them but no free kick or what so ever was given. As for the call for penalty, don't really think it should be given (but at that point in time, i had hoped that the referee would give the penalty!)
The second half was crap, i should think. Arsenal missed to many chances and if they were to convert those chances, Liverpool would be certainly be embarrassed. But it was a test of Liverpool's defence and they came out of it pretty well (thank God!). I hate to think of it as them being really lucky, preferring to think that they are improving their skills. In the second half, all the Liverpool players seem to be in their own half, defending. There was no one unfront, well we seldom see the 2 strikers upfront rather. They were like kept within their own half which makes it so diffcult to go on the attack 'cause there's no one upfront to receive the balls.

If only Liverpool would defend that well against Man Utd. Ryan Giggs, Keane, Cole and Yorke are the players that liverpool have to watch out for. Perhaps Heggam on a good day might be able to keep Giggs out of the game. Heggam's got speed (as seen in the match against Arsenal) and he can make those runs upfront. Mark Giggs tightly in the first half and change tactics in the second half ('cause that's what ferguson always does and if you don't change tactics, he would counter yours!). Man Utd have this tendency to pass long balls to Giggs, so the defender had better watch out for this. As for Cole and Yorke, don't ever leave them out of sight (i think everyone knows that), not much harm would be done. In the Liverpool Vs Man Utd match, i believe that either johnsen or one of the neville brothers would be playing and you might count scholes in too. Tough match of Liverpool but i hope they would come out of it unscathed.

Macca's really leaving.........11/1/99
Okie it's confirmed, Maca's leaving. He's  not interested in staying. He cites criticisms about his under-achievement as one of the reasons why he is leaving. He would be leaving at the end of the season under the Bosman ruling. Liverpool would not be paid a single cent for him. Real madrid and other European clubs are among the clubs said to be interested in macca.
Liverpool fans would certainly be feeling terrible about macca's departure, but if he doesn't feel like playing for Liverpool, just let him go. He's the product of Liverpool Youth Team, the club that groomed him and yet, he is leaving. Call him unloyal or what? Okie so maybe it's his life and he can do anything he likes about it. But he shouldn't leave at this time when Liverpool needs quality players like him. Okie, so i can't get over the fact that he's leaving the club that groomed him........

Liverpool Vs Port Vale (3 Jan)
Well, it's great that Liverpool won Port Vale but then Liverpool would be facing Man Utd in the 4th round clash. I really dislike Liverpool playing against Man Utd because they are one team that Liverpool somehow can't beat. (I hope that i'm horribly wrong!!!!!) The match against Port Vale, the first half was pretty good. It was heartening to see players go all out (the clash btw Carragher and Staunton). But it also revealed the fact that Liverpool lacks team work; understanding among themselves. Imagine, you can actually knock out your own team mate eh. And there were many instances in the match where players misunderstood each other, and thank god it didn't result in a goal or a couple of goals for Port Vale. But if they were playing against a team like Man Utd who would exploit Liverpool's mistake, then it's a goner. The second half of the match wasn't so good at all. Bad passes, mistakes etc......all these enabled Port vale to come back on seemingly stronger. And the funny thing with Liverpool is that the first 10 mins and last 10 mins of each half, esp the second half, they are so unsettled! Which means they actually play 50 mins of "okie football". So what are their chances of winning Man Utd? My head tells me that liverpool may lose but i'm hoping that i'm so very wrong.
Another clash next week is against Arsenal, i do hope that Liverpool can win that match or maybe a draw would also satisfy me. But from the looks of it......(i know liverpool are on a so called winning streak, but they weren't playing their best, they were just a little better than the opponent, and luck was with them too. They didn't actually outshine the opponent nor they they play well in both halves). Maybe after one half, the coach and his assistants ought to change tactics cos the opponent, after the first half would have came up with a plan to counter-attack........anyway, i hope that Liverpool would win both matches!

Liverpool Vs Leicester (31 Oct)
I was wishing and hoping that they would show this match. But the TV station was going to show the Aston Villa Vs Chelsea match. As it turned out, my hopes came true 'cause the Aston Villa Vs Chelsea match was postponed due to water-logged pitch. And i thought that i was going to have a fine day after the match, as it turned out. But whole day was spoilt because of it.
It should not have been a win for Leicester. Perhaps a draw. What was David James thinking when he let in that goal!?! Okie so maybe it was the wet pitch that Liverpool could not play good football on. They were so un-Liverpool in this match. Everything doesn't seem right. Their passes were terrible. Paul Ince was not the hard-tackling captain, trying to win back every lost ball (I'm not blaming Ince for the lost). The defenders were making horrible mistakes. Leicester would have got another goal in for a terrible mistake by a defender(i forgot who it was.)
Looks like Liverpool's title hopes have been washed away. I'm not trying to be a wet blanket. It's just that to be a league winner, the most a team can afford to lose is between 5 to 8 games. That's the most, it's according to statistics, MIND YOU. From the looks of it, Aston Villa would have yet to lose a game, Arsenal and Manchester would only lost 1 game each, and Chelsea who lost 1 game but have 2 games in hand looks to have a better chance than Liverpool. No doubt, it's not the end of the season or even half the season. But unless Liverpool can STOP losing, get their act together and actually win games, while their opponents start drawing or losing games, only than would Liverpool have a chance of winning the League title.

Liverpool Vs Nottm. Forest (24 Oct)
It's been a pretty long time since Liverpool won a league match, but if they were to lose it, we ought to have doubted their capability, after all, it's Nott Forest they are playing against.(i'm not trying to put down Nott........well, maybe i am.........)Anyway, it's great that Owen came back to score after like a mth or so. It's been a long time...........Maybe the rest proofed well, as seen in his deliverance of a netful of goals in this match. But maybe not, as critics would say that had Owen not rested, he would be able to help Liverpool win that Uefa match. It's Owen's first home league goals and Liverpool's first win in 6 games. While the other teams drew their matches, Liverpool have won theirs and hopefully, Liverpool can take advantage of this. (PS this is not a match review, just how i felt after Liverpool's first win in 6 games, a little glad only 'cause i don't know if they would actually keep on playing the kind of game that they are capable of.)

Liverpool Vs Chelsea
(4 Oct)
A pretty freaky game i call it. It was a bad, bad mistake by David James. What was he doing out there? He was so far away from the goalpost. What was he thinking? He wanted to leave the goalkeeping to his defenders?????!!!! Okie so perhaps it's his first game after a long time , so perhaps he wasn't used to it.....or is he changing his goalkeeping style to come off his line more often? He was caught more than once, twice or even thrice off his line! ( way off his line!). The first goal should not have happened! But it was pretty heartening(i can't find the right word to use) to see defenders like Phil Babb going all out to prevent the opponent from scoring. Babb was like dashing to prevent the goal, not seeing where he was heading. (OUCHHHHH!) But i don't mean heartening to see them getting injured okie.
Where was Owen? Ever since his hat-trick against Newcastle, he has not scored for Liverpool........sigh........defenders tend to mark him more closely. That's sucky. But luckily, Liverpool can rely on other players like Redknapp, Berger to score. Redknapp did pretty well......missed a couple of chances........but the goal he scored wasn't much to look at. But anyway, Liverpool did manage a draw and that's way better losing! Heaps better than losing. Though i would prefer them to win. Liverpool's recent matches have not been up to expectations. They managed only 2 points out of a possible 12 from 4 outings. That's way way terrible. If they wanna win the league, they better do something. With shaky defence, blunder-prone Friedel, erractic James, closely marked strikers, hot-tempered midfielders.............wonder what they can do.....

Liverpool Vs Charlton (Sept 19)
Another question again. What happened to them? Just as i was thinking that maybe the game against West ham was wrong. Guess i'm wrong. They are now to same old liverpool squad as before, so shaky in defence. Charlton shouldn't have scored the second goal. It was a bad mistake by the defence. The left so much space for the Charlton player. Two players "guarded" one Charlton player but left the other unattended. And Charlton would have won the game had not the referee stop the game at the crucial moment to book Carragher.

Liverpool Vs West Ham (Sept 12)
What happened to them, i really wonder. They should have stuck with the original line-up which saw them draw 1 game and won 3! Maybe Houiller was trying to prove a point, that Riedle must be in the line-up and that Evans previous tactics were wrong, as seen in this match. This match makes it seem like it's Evans tactics working all wrong again! Guess it's not Liverpool's day.
And the yucky part is that Redknapp missed a couple of shots which would have been really perfect had it gone in! I don't feel like saying anymore, what with the first lost..........

Liverpool vs Arsenal (Aug 22)
Liverpool and Arsenal both their chances but both failed to find the net. Honestly, i have not seen liverpool play with so much life in them. They were just going for the ball, trying to win the ball back when they lost possession of it. It was just wonderful seeing them play that way. And the defenders were playing rather okie, so much better than how they usually play. Although there are lapse of concentration from them at times.Perhaps Liverpool were lucky. But they were also playing better. We see Liverpool losing concentration especially during the last 5-10 minutes of the game. Think they probably think that the opponent can't score during that time or whatever is their reason. They tend to switch off during that time and let the opponents get the better of them. Anyway, Jamie Carragher played well and if given the experience and exposure, he would be able to equal Tony Adams and play a part in England's contention of whatever trophies it may be.

Liverpool Vs Southampton (Aug 16)
But a win is a win!!!!!!Liverpool won Southampton 2-1. Goals by Riedle and Owen.Their need for a central defender and a better goalkeeper is clearly seen in the match against Southampton. Southampton had a couple of chances but luck was not on their side. At times, we see Liverpool scrambling at the back line. Not all teams are as luckless as Southampton.
