Comments on Liverpool's Season Date: 15/5/00
It's been a long time since I've written something. Sorry about that cause I've been really busy with my work and stuff.
Anyway, about the game last night-Bradford v Liverpool, it's Liverpool's 5th game without scoring any goals and it's been 5 games since they last won. This is really bad, especially for a team who's trying to get a place in the European Champions League. With such inconsistency, I'll rather wish they play in the UEFA cup for experience.
The deadly strike force that Liverpool was prided to have seemed out of sorts in recent weeks. Perhaps because Fowler and Owen have not had enough games. That's an excuse
Last season, it was the shaky defence that was a great concern to Liverpool.
But as shown from those last few games, the strike force, midfield and defence are lacking. Somehow, the defence that seemed so formidable most of the season crumbled in the last few games. This as well as the lack of ability of the strikers to score goals and the midfield’s lack of creativity all add to Liverpool’s disappointing run of 5 games winless.
This is extremely disappointing. Just when you thought that they are going to be as good as Arsenal or Man Utd and deserve a place in the Champions League.
Season Wrap up
Liverpool started the season on a low, losing to lowly Watford, Middlesbrough, Manchester United, Southampton (in the Worthington Cup) and won Leeds United only through an own goal by Radebe. As well as ending the season on that low note, being unable to win a game or keep a clean sheet in the last 5 games.
Then again, they’ve had a not too bad season, being able to capitalize on Arsenal and Leeds lost in form and at least having a fighting chance to win a place in the much coveted Champions League.
Compared to last season, they’re so much better especially in defence.
Westerveld had a good, if not great season and it’s only his first season with Liverpool!
The defence of Hyppia and Henchoz - impressive!
The talents of Liverpool’s youth uncovered, in the form of the Steven Gerrard and David Thompson.
Redknapp-don't think he's that hardworking...it's like he waits for the ball to come to him. If it does, then great, if it doesn't he'll just do this job around the pitch supervising the others. He's one of my favourite players and i can't bear to see him leave. But for the sake of Liverpool. And perhaps the excuse for his not too good form is cause he's been injured for such long periods and it takes time.
Heskey-Somehow he ain't as good as they say he is. Strong striker and although he scored a couple of goals. Don't think he's that effective a striker. I still believe in the goal Finisher Fowler rather than the Highly talked about Heskey and the Overrated Owen.
And this season, the goals have been coming from as many as 13 players:
[11 goals] Owen
[9 goals] Camara & Berger
[3 goals] Fowler, Heskey, Redknapp, Thompson & Murphy
[2 goals] Hyppia
[1 goal] Gerrard, Heggem, Smicer & Hamann
While Fowler and Owen were injured for most of the season, Camara & Berger as well as the other players were able to fill the gap as ‘strikers’ which is really fantastic.
Overall, Liverpool had a much better season but they just ran out of steam in the last few games, just like any team did (READ: Leeds in ¾ season). They are after all human and do make mistakes.
If Liverpool is going to play in the UEFA cup next season, they need more players on hand to take precaution for injuries. There is a strong need to find the right strike combination, bolster up the defence and add some creativity in the midfield.
Win, lose or draw, we as Liverpool fans will stand behind them and support them all the way (although we would very much want them to win every game)! You’ll Never Walk Alone! At least this time I'll be staying up late to watch my team play.
Whatever
that's news
Foreign League...United Nations. Now
Liverpool have been transformed to a United Nations team,
just like that chelsea is. A far cry from their usual
policy. Kinda sad.....but we fans want results......hope
it's better this way.
Liverpool 5th position
After being away for
3 weeks, it's great to come back and be in for a
surprise, that Liverpool is now in 5th place. A nice
early Xmas present. Had they won the West Ham match, they
would have gone 10 match unbeaten. Wonderful news that
would be!
I'm so pleased with the results now. It's fantastic. I
just hope that they can continuing winning games! Their
defensive results seem to be the best one in the premier
league, even better than that of Man Utd or even Arsenal.
So who says we need expensive players to succeed. Anyway,
now that i'm back, I hope to watch more matches and write
more match reviews, that is if time permits. Till then,
Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year!
Liverpool's Lost
What happened to
them? They lost 2 games in a row! The game against
Watford...i expected them to win...but deep down...i knew
they wouldn't.....think it's because of what happened
last season against Charlton. They lost the game against
a newly relegated team last season, and it happens this
season again. Can you believe it? They actually lost to a
newly relegated team! I can't......but what happened is a
fact....underlies the fact that Liverpool is no more the
team they were in the 80s....or even early 90s (though
they weren't so good then).....
Okie last season, Houllier said he didn't have the
resources to change the team around......this season
round, he's spend millions on players, with Liverpool
becoming the top spending club. But look.....such
terrible results still occur.
Okie so probably the team have not been able to gel
together...this has always been a major problem for
Liverpool.
But take a look at other teams, who bought foreigners and
yet manage to get those foreigners and locals working as
a team in the shortest possible time. So, wat's with the
excuse about having too many new players in the team and
not having enough time to get them to gel together as a
team. I am searching for excuses for their
performance......but sadly i have found
none......none....
Anyway, Liverpool's next 3 games are very
tough....against Leed, Arsenal and Man U. Personally,
it's reallly tough for Liverpool to try to pull off a
win. If they can it'll be great! A couple of draws would
satisfy me too, afterall, those teams are competitive
teams with skills, teamwork, good defence etc...that
Liverpool clearly lacks.
Oh and another thing bothers me.....that those
ex-liverpool players who are unwanted by Houllier seems
to be playing much better for their present club. Take
Leonardson for example......he scored 2 winning goals in
2 weeks...and Spurs are now at the top of the table.
Probably Liverpool shouldn't have sold him, ince, mcateer
and james...they are not good enough...but take a look at
Liverpool's reserves...i think i would rather choose
ince, mcateer, james, leonardson instead of people like
staunton, kvarme and bjornebye...oh well....
After 2 loses, and with the next 3 tough matches coming
up, i think (but i hope that i'm terribly wrong!) that
Liverpool's title race is virtually over. Their
pre-season games had looked so convincing that i believed
that this is gonna be their year. But sadly......i guess
not, what with the competitive season. Once you lose 5-6
games.....the title race is virtually over. No doubt u
might say Liverpool lost only 2 games....but look it's
only the beginning of the season and yet they lost 2
games in their 1st 3 games. With the competitiveness of
these few seasons, title contenders only lose up to a
maximum of 5 games...probably even less....which means
that Liverpool have no more chance.....i hope i'm
horribly wrong on that one.....*sigh*
New Season
Well, the new season
kicked off just a week ago.
Newcastle actually had shearer sent off and they lost 2
games in a row. This would probably mean that Gullit
might just be booted from Newcastle.....somehow he can't
get things to work. Perhaps it's the players? Oh
well.....
The man u vs everton match was another interesting match.
Everton played pretty well......only that you keep seeing
gaps in their defence. They were lucky that they did not
concede more goals and were lucky enough to draw the
game, goal courtesy from stam. The first mistake he ever
made since coming to man u. As for bosnich, don't think
he can step into schmeichel's boots, too big for him. I
think that their 2nd choice goalie is better than
him...anyway, i'm not a man u fan...so why should i
bother.
Match Review:(Other Teams)Date
Too busy to write about other teams this season.
Sorry :)

Thoughts
With the new season starting on August 15, and so many
foreigners in the English game, it is certainly something
to look forward to. But like Arsene Wenger has said,
having so many of them in the English game would kill off
young talents. The figure is alarming, 103 out of the 220
Premiership players likely to start the new season is
English, with Chelsea being able to field a whole team of
foreigners.
