Food Pyramid


Bread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta Group
The Food Guide Pyramid suggests that people eat six to 11 servings from this group each day.
amounts of food that count as one serving:
  • one slice of bread
  • 1/2 cup of cooked rice or pasta
  • 1/2 cup of cooked cereal
  • 1 ounce of cold cereal
  • 1/2 of a bagel or English muffin
Vegetable Group
The Food Guide Pyramid recommends three to five servings from the vegetable group each day.
amounts of food that count as one serving:
  • 1/2 cup of chopped (raw) or cooked vegetables
  • 1 cup of raw leafy vegetables (like spinach)
  • 3/4 cup of vegetable juice
Fruit Group
The Food Guide Pyramid recommends that people eat two to four servings from this group each day.
amounts of food that count as one serving:
  • 1 medium-sized apple, banana, or orange
  • 1/2 cup of cooked or canned fruit
  • 1/2 cup of fruit juice (orange, grapefruit, or cranberry, for example)
Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese Group
The Food Guide Pyramid suggests two to threee servings from this group each day.

  • 1 cup of low-fat or nonfat milk
  • 1 cup of low-fat or nonfat yogurt
  • 1 1/2 to 2 ounces of cheese
Meat, Poultry, Fish, Beans, Eggs, and Nuts Group
The Food Guide Pyramid suggests two to threee servings from this group each day.
amounts of food that count as one serving:
  • 2 to 3 ounces of cooked lean meat, poultry, fish, or tofu
  • 1 egg, 1/2 cup cooked dry beans (pinto, black, and navy are types of dry beans), or 2 tablespoons of peanut butter count as 1 ounce of lean meat
Fats, Oils, and Sweets
This section is somewhat different from the other parts; it's not actually a "group." Fats, oils, and sweets are at the topmost part of the pyramid because, while your body needs them, it only needs a very small amount.
The Food Guide Pyramid suggests that people should eat these types of foods sparingly, or in moderation.
