Diabetes and how it has affected me
Well, I guess I'll start off about myself:
My name is Matt Baldwin. I am a 16 year old male living currently in Philadelphia Pa. I am just your average teenager. My life was easy, I'd got to bed at 2:00 am and get up around 3:00 PM. I was active, played hockey everyday for hours on end. I would eat candy to the point of nausea. Then I got the flu and it got pretty bad and then I lost a lot of weight, around 35 pounds,(remember this is in a weeks time) I was vomiting, drinking liquids as if I was a man dying of thirst, urinating like a water fall. My mom decided if I didn't get better by the next day we would go to the hospital. So a day passes and I seemed to have gotten worse. We go the hospital. I was dehydrated. They took blood. And the results were that my Bg was 1040. The doctors were surprised I was still alive cause usually after 900 you go into a coma or something more fatal. So they explained what the problem was and asked if we had any occurrence of diabetes in the family. Which we had none. They took more samples, yet this time of urine. Now I have ketones. My sugar is so high it is overflowing to my kidneys. So now they come to the conclusion that I have Type I Diabetes Mellitus, commonly know as "Juvenile Diabetes" cause of its highly occurrence in young children. So now 4 years have gone past, and that confused scared little boy has grown into a semi-wise confident young adult. I went from learning to teaching. That is the purpose of this page to teach those who think diabetes is a horrible tragedy. It is not all that bad. You are healthier, able to live longer cause you take better care of yourself, and are confident in yourself. It may seem bad that you can't have sugar, but there is so much out they for diabetics today. Sugar free chocolate, sugar free ice cream, candy bars, and many more sugar free candies. And they are all just as good as the regular candy or better.
Now that I gave you my opinion and my view give me yours...
