Increasing my knowledge is what drives me the most, as evidenced by my salivation at just the thought of Barnes & Noble, my fire-hazard book collection and my multiple publication subscriptions (including those to Nutrition Action Healthletter, Prevention, Consumer Reports, Consumer Reports on Health, The University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter, and Fitness). Since I can't read when I'm driving, however, I also enjoy listening to most types of music, including my all-time favorite band, Toad the Wet Sprocket. Although they split a few years ago, with the lead singer pursuing a solo career, they all continue to make great music as Glen Phillips (I got to meet him recently before his set at The Middle East in Cambridge 04/05/05!) and Lapdog. My radio stations of choice include 95.7 WZID (the 10-minute traffic reports come in very useful!) and 104.5 WXLO since I prefer the sounds of the late 70's/early 80's pop (e.g., Chicago and Journey), as well as melodic music, such as new contributions from John Mayer and Maroon 5.
Although my life pretty much revolves around work right now (I'm an EMT-Intermediate affiliated with Mountain Valley EMS and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team (DHART)), when I DO go out, I like to enjoy a good meal at a restaraunt that offers unique cuisine, as I'll try anything once. Not-so-exotic Denny's -- a good hangout at 3AM -- has some tasty (no, I didn't say healthy) comfort food as well.
Movies that reflect on what life's about or that are simply uplifting (romantic/historic dramas/comedies/fantasies and classics) encourage me to spend quite a bit of $ to keep my video and DVD selections stocked. Favorites are Dirty Dancing, Ever After (also great soundtrack), Mystic Pizza, Anne of Green Gables/Avonlea, Never Been Kissed, The Wedding Singer (yeah, I'm a Drew Barrymore fan), The Neverending Story, and last but certainly not least, Watership Down (it's also my favorite book). One of these days I would like to own the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I still have some guilt over not having read the book after all these years, since it is where my name came from (with its atypical spelling).
I'm trying to cut back on my TV viewing time, so the only shows I watch semi-regularly are That 70's Show (Wednesdays, 8PM, Fox), The Simpsons (Sundays, 8PM, Fox) and Will & Grace (Thursdays, 9PM, NBC). Some shows I will watch when I catch them on include Friends, Frasier, Mad about You, and *sheepish grin* The Cosby Show (just to find out what a fellow UMass Amherst alum did with his education *cough, ahem*). The E! True Hollywood Story is a captivating show (I have the Dirty Dancing one on tape, of course) and there are usually pretty good programs on The Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel. In addition, since the eighth grade I have been watching the escapades of Agatha Christie's Belgian detective, Hercule
Poirot, starring David Suchet (a British Broadcasting Corporation Production -- yeah, it was my (British) dad that got me into that). You can find him Sunday afternoons/evenings on the Biography Channel, or occasionally on PBS's "Mystery!" or A&E's "Mysteries to Die For." And of course, I own many of the episodes on DVD, as well as the soundtrack to the series. My favorite episode is "The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb," because I'm intrigued by Egyptology.
As anyone who knows me well can attest, I love collecting cow and Snoopy stuff; just take a look at the back of my car ('99 Saturn SL2) and the tattoo on my back.
