About the society

Aims of the All India Strabismological Society (AISS founded by Dr. H.L.Patney and Dr. Sudha Awasthi at Eye Hospital, Sitapur, India in 1967 in accordance with the principles of International Strabismological Association) and the JKA Institute of Strabismology:

(NOTE: The source of inspiration for both, starting a strabismological society in India and having these aims for it was International Strabismological Association (ISA). The decision to start the AISS was taken by the above named ophthalmologists/strabismologists right after they returned from the founding session of the ISA in Giessen, W. Germany in 1966. In fact, the first four aims are the same as those of the ISA)

1. To disseminate knowledge on all sensory and motor aspects of strabismus and disorders of ocular motility
2. To foster clinical and experimental research
3. To encourage and support countries wishing to set up organizations for the study and treatment of strabismus and associated sensory disorders
4. To create, as far as possible, a common terminology and a standardization of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
5. To hold free strabismus diagnostic and surgical camps for poor children, in order to provide the much needed free consultation and therapy to prevent amblyopia, treat strabismus and amblyopia when indicated and get rid of strabismus by surgery when required.
6. To spread awareness in public of the necessity of a complete ophthalmic examination including a complete orthoptic examination for prevention of ambyopia, correction of significant refractive errors and immediate treatment of strabismus, amblyopia and related disorders.
7. To encourage ophthalmologists to take up this important subject and create a love in them, of this very interesting and exciting subspecialty.

" The science of ophthalmic surgery is as vast as the ocean. It is a growing science, one should not think that everything is written in these verses. The underlying principles of the Science of ophthalmology, as written in these verses, would therefore sprout, grow and bear good fruit only under the congenial heat of a medical genius."

Sushruta
In "Sushruta Samhita", dated about 1000 B.C.
