Hello Everybody;
It's been about 13 months since my surgery and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all very much for your kind thoughts and letters. And yes, I especially want to thank my husband for his love, support, and strength during this time of transformation. He is truly the best thing that ever happened to me, and everyday I remember how grateful I am to be a part of his life.
This web page has been a great experience for us both. Gary is most verbal and expressive in his writing, and this journal served as a wonderful tool for him to vent his feelings, and track the whole surgery process. I tried very hard never to look over his shoulder or voice an opinion when he wrote because I wanted him to be free to voice his true feelings, whether good or bad. Not only would this serve him well, but it would be the most helpful to others whose loved ones were faced with the pain of obesity. It did help us and we hope it helps you, too.
I've got to tell ya, I've kept quiet because I'm no role model for WLS. At 13 months out I've only lost 65 lbs. Gary once said that I had it too easy. There isn't much of anything I can't eat, or don't. But, the greatest difference is that I can eat small amounts and feel satisfied! Beginning at 240 lbs., now at 175, I can't tell you how much better I feel physically, mentally, emotionally, sexually, even spiritually. And the weight is still coming off slowly as I make the small changes like taking stairs instead of the elevator.
For me, WLS has been a blessing and has changed by life and if I had to choose, I would do it again in a minute. But everyone needs to measure the risks and benefits for themselves. The most important part of the surgery for the patient and their family is to be well educated about it. Knowing exactly what to expect, from the anxiety about insurance coverage to the ugly scar on your belly, will prepare you and your loved one to recover happily.
