Krukenberg Tumor

specimen
image

This middle-aged woman presented with an acute abdomen. Exploratory laparotomy showed a very large perforated gastric ulcer in an otherwise thickened, tumefactive stomach. The ovaries showed enlargement and replacement by tumor. This ovary weighed 283 grams and measured 9.5 x 8.0 x 6.0 cm.

The Krukenberg tumor is classically a metastatic signet ring cell adenocarcinoma arising in the stomach and metastasizing to the ovaries. Other primary sites have been described, and a few cases have no detectable primary.

The photo was taken with a Minolta X-370 with 100mm Rokkor bellows lens on Kodak Elite ISO 100 film. The illumination was four Photofloods, and a blue compensating filter was used to balance color properly for this daylight-balanced film. The exposure was probably something like 1/8 second at f/5.6
