I've suffered since I was 5. Was diagnosed 7 years ago. Either because of the medical help I sought for my own denial I haven't done much to get better in that time. I really need to get my life together, or have one and need to find medical help that will help. I know I am not crazy. Does anyone know of a doctor within New England, New York that will help me without questioning or making me take all those tests again. I live in Killington, Vermont. I have neither the time or money to convince someone what is wrong with me, probably not the patience either. If anyone can help please e-mail me. Thank you and thanks for offering this forum.

I am so glad to have found this site. I have been suffering from nausea and vomiting for about 12 years (guess) and feel fine in between attacks. The attacks have become more regular (every 8-14days) just wake up slightly earlier than normal, ca.6am and h ve a funny feeling in my head and neck. I then know that I will have to spend the day in bed or otherwise vomit at work, in the car, wihtout being able to control it. Now I am taking Vomex A which my mum recommended. It keeps the vomiting at bay but I stil feel nauseous, need to lie in bed in silence and without anybody around me. I sleep for about 34 hours in all and then I am back to normal. Is this CVS? I have just resigned from my job because I missed so many days of work and thought the stress may be a trigger. Now at home I still suffer from attacks. Is this CVS??? And what can I do to stop this. Life is not much fun when you are waiting for your next attack.

My son was born with a pyloric muscle spasm and would like to know if anyone has the same thing and if this can be a cause of cvs. He started projectile vomiting when he was 10 days old and continued off and on for 18 months. He stopped vomiting althoug he always had a weak stomach. Three and a half years ago he started with episodes of this violent voniting that would last for days on end. He winds up in the hospital for IV's and shots of demerol. Compazine, valium and all the other drugs don't help at all. Hot showers make him feel better but they don't stop the vomiting. Please e-mail me if you can give me any information about the pyloric muscle spasm. Thanks and good luck to everyone. Janet

I have recently discovered that this syndrom isn't in my head and I'm not crazy after all. I have had this illness for about 4 years and I've been treated and tested for everything. I really would apreciate it if someone would let me know I'm not alone ut there and there are others that have the same thing I do. I am 23 years old and this CVS stuff sucks. I hate it and it is so stressfull to know at any given time I could get sick again. I know that it is certainly hard on my family and my friends bu they've been very supportive. I do have some rather strange side affects to share and maybe others have experienced them as well. I want to take showers! wierd huh? Ya and the hotter the better and lots of them. It helps the nausea to subside I gues . I also don't want to talk to any one. Nor do I want them to talk to me. The talking makes the nausea worse. Is that normal? I also have the urge to guzzle liquids after I vomit. I know the doctors say to sip but I can't. I've been on so many meds nd I found that I'm alergic to phenergan and compazine. Bummer! I also am on Zofran and reglan Paxil and Trazadone. I sure hope it works and good luck to all of those who are experiencing this syndrom also and thank you to those who are there to comfort them. We appreciate you even though you may not hear it.

A pediatric gastroenterologist diagnosed my daughter w/abdominal migraines. He assured us after 3 years of searching that it was not a psychological problem or an eating disorder. However, the medical staff in the hospital refused to concur. Our daught r was "written off" as a mental case. In retrospect, she always had symptoms of CVS. As an infant she had projectile vomiting and as she grew older she would often experience a feeling of "fullness" and nausea. She has scoliosis and at 16 y.o. was diag osed with ovarian cysts. She began taking birth control pills to "shrink" the cysts. (At this time, she has been told that she again has two large ovarian cysts - 3rd time in 3yrs.) After taking the pill she began vomiting violently and losing weight. An endoscopy revealing H-Pylori bacteria present, upon return from a H.S. Art Trip to Europe, was ignored. Instead, a sludge-filled thickened gall bladder was removed. Finally an antibiotic regimen cured the bacteria. Throughout this time, she was having episodes of vomiting, struggling to put on some weight, and being told by the doctors "it's in your head". So we took her to a psychiatrist specializing in teen problems. He confirmed she does not have an eating disorder. So we went to another, who rec nfirmed that it is not in her head. Finally, a nurse told me to trust the diagnosis of abdominal migraines; since, according to her, my daughter displayed classic symptoms of cyclic vomiting syndrome. So I went home and searched the net all night. Than fully I found this website, e-friends, and a great doctor. Now my daughter has been removed from the incorrect medicines and is receiving the proper treatment: Reglan before meals (a simple gastric-emptying test showed her stomach to be 97% full 2 hrs. fter eating) / Amitriptylin before bed (to aid in sleep and as an anti-migraine dosage) / Prilosec (to control the severe acid relux). It's only been a couple of weeks but the results are amazing. She is now entering the luteac phase of her menstrual cy le so we are watching for the onset of an attack. Last month was the first time we were aware of the relationship and it proved positive, unfortunately. I hope this info helps someone else and am willing to be in contact with anyone who needs to "talk". br>

My daughter's third major episode (about a week) of acute nausea and vomiting has just ended. Nights in the ER for rehydration and pain control and just horrible days. She's had almost every possible test and all are normal. No food allergies per test, although we know those are not complete. Well, now we have a label, which is a little reassuring along the "misery loves company" line. More important, what do we do about it? mb

I have suffered from CVS since I was 2 years old, and I am now 18. When I was 10, the episodes became very severe, occuring as often as twice a month, and frequently causing hospitalization. I abruptly got completely better, and didn't have any episodes until I was 17. And I have now had five episodes since then, two of which have hospitalized me. It is very difficult, thinking I had overcome this disease, only to have it come back again.

My daughter, 16 has recently been diagnosed with Cyclic Vomiting syndrome, (they think). She has had two vomiting episodes since January 1. She has had no history of these kind of symptons before. Both times she was hospitalized for severe dehydration nd it took a week before she could keep anything down. She first got sick and threw up her dinner and the vomiting just didn't stop. She has been through all kinds of tests for all kinds of things and every test has shown nno problems. She has taken Zo ran, Reglan, and Phenagrin and now is taking elavil hopefully to prevent another episode. The primary care doctors want her to see an OB/GYN. I couldn't imaging why?????? They said these "vomiting spells" may be related to her menstrual cycle. ANyone lse heard of this??? She has missed 16 days of school in 2000 so if she wasn't stressed before she will be now with all that work to make up!!!! I'd be interested in hearing from anyone whose situation sounds similar. We're frustrated!!!!

Hey Guys and gals! I've had this illness for the last 8 years, bit of a bummer! Attacks come once every 3-4 months and last for about 36 hours. I'm at Exeter Uni (UK) at the mo studying Economics and Politics. I've found no effective drugs to conquer this illness, however ince being at uni, I've been alot less stressed and have only had one attack in 5 months, I'm pretty impressed with myself! If anyone has any suggestions feel free to email me! Also I heard the illness may develop in migraines, is this so, as I've recently been getting some pretty bad headaches, only short, but there like daggers in my head! Is this true?

Help! My husband has very similar symptoms to CVS, but has never received a diagnosis. For the past 3 years, he has had recurrent episodes of nausea and vomiting, that seem to have differnent triggers at different times. Sometimes, it seems like stress br ngs it on. Other times it's because he wants to eat fast food at 11:00 PM! - Of course, he only does this when he is feeling better and is really hungry! Tim ate a "bad" piece of meat which gave him food poisoning about 3 years ago and was violently ill the next morning. Since then, he has had recurrent bouts of vomiting and nausea. He has lost about 60 pounds and has a difficult time gaining weight back. e has seen 4 different GI specialists and his primary care Dr. SUCKED! No one had time enough to really figure out what was going on with him. His current Dr. is a lot more kind, and willing to try various meds. Tim has had all the tests possible: blood w rk, CAT scan, MRI, upper and lower GI, stool samples, 2 endoscopies and 1 colonoscopy. All of which turned up ZIP! Has has been on compazine, zofran, taigan and various other anti-emetics. None of which did much. It would seem like they were working and then all of a sudden he would get another episode. Now he takes anti anxiety meds and muscle relaxants and tranquilizers so he can sleep. If anyone would like to give me some hope or help both Tim and I would greatly appreciate it!!

I want to know if there are any new medications on the market that have been approved for use in CVS sufferers. I have been ill for 10 years, but only got a diagnosis in July, 1999. The medications that have been prescribed for me do not work but about 0% of the time, so if they don't, it's off to the ER, and sometimes I am admitted overnight to controll the pain and vomiting.

We are looking for someone in our area that understands and treats patients with CVS. Progress o date with our current DR. has been VERY slow and non-effective. We have lost confidence in him and are seeking another Dr. Any help would be greatly appreciated....Thanks.Bob

My 16 year old daughter started episodes of vomiting about 2 years ago. At first they were about four times a year. This past spring they increased to several times a month as frequent as five days apart sometimes. The episodes seem very much like the d scription of CVS. Her neurologist suspected that this is what we were dealing with. However, she said that the vomiting profile tends to accur in children and then change to migraine headaches aafter puberty. Whereas, my daughter never had vomiting or igraines until tha vomiting started around thirteen. We have gone through a lot of tests to rule out other things: GI problems, seizures, other neurological anomolies. My daughter has significant mental retardation and features that indicate a probable enetic syndrome, but none that has yet been identified. With her vomiting, a Compazine suppository seems to make the episode less prolonged and violent, but doesn't stop it altogehter. Other preventative medications are not indicated because of the Rita in and Clonidine she already takes for her impulsivity. I was interested to hear that other adults do experience CVS because that was the only hesitation for her Doctors in assigning the diagnosis to Hannah -- that she was "too old for the profile."

I was diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochestor in 1989. I had a few hard years living with CVS, but have kept myself in good spirits & have never gotten depressed from having it. Even though at times it can be a hard thing to live with! I've been married for 7 years & have 2 healthy boys. I had hard pregnancies, but both sons were healthy. When I was diagnosed I was one in a handful of people who were actually diagnosed with CVS, so I'm shocked to discover all this info on CVS now! My oldest had a spell hen he was 4 & was in the hospital over night, but has been fine since. I take zofran when I feel an attack coming on & it helps alot! Feel free to email me, I want people to know that there is hope & you can get better! I like to think that I've overcome this horrible thing!

How hard is it to diagnose? I've been having recurring episodes of morning sickness for approximately two years and have found now cause. I've undergone several tests and I'm perfectly healthy. I don't vomit for long, once maybe twice in the morning, bu it lasts 3-4 days and I feel miserable throughout the episode. Any information I can get would be helpful.

My husband is a prostate cancer survivor (13yrs) this past year he has been having bouts of vomiting steadily every month almost to the day. He would vomit all night, and rest the next day, and then return to normal. We have been blaming it on his medica ion, as he has and still is on lupron ( a very powerful female hormone ) which can have vomiting as a side effect. But since he has been on this for years with no apparent side effect like this, possibly it could be this CVS. I just happened upon this s te on the web, and see that the symptoms are the same as every one is claiming. His Oncologist and Urologist can't understand this vomiting on a regular basis at all. Could this appear out of the blue with no other explanation? Thank you for your help. Sincerely, Eleanor Beckwith.

I am 22 years old. I have been having my "vomitting episodes" for as long as I can remmeber. It has always been associated with anxiety or stress, and at one point, after a year of counseling, I felt that I was able to control this. I never inderstood hy this happened, and still do not know if in fact it is CVS. I am in the process of having some blood work and other tests done. It is comforting to read some of the comments on the web page. However, I am very confused as to whether my syptoms actual y match up with CVS. There are times that I can come out of an episode after a few hours like nothing even happened, and there are times that I need to be hospitalized. It is something that I have ben struggling with for such a long time, but something hat I have always thought I could control if I just learned how to relax enough or distract myself during the episodes. Having this mentioned to me by my psychologist and a gastrointestnal specialist is comforting in a sense, but at the same time, it har to know if what I have can be defined as CVS. I was just wondering if someone that suffered from this could related to these feelings or had any helpful hints for trying to figure this out. The web page was so helpful, so I thank you for that. It has iven me a feeling fo hope that has been lost for so long, and without hope, I live in fear of my next episode.

He lost his job which he loved and just felt he couldn't make it on his own. He wants despirately to do well in life and of course get rid of this devistating ailment. Possibly, hearing from you will lift his spirits. He s currently sick and cannot go more than 2 or 3 weeks without recurrance. Thank you for listening, Ed Briggs

My 30 yr old son started having vomiting episodes two years ago; there was no apparent trigger. There is no family history of CVS or migraines. He was diagnosed after about 6 months of visits to the ER and several specialists. He is currently taking Elav l every night and Zofran when an episode begins to try and stop the vomiting. So far this does not appear to be working. He is still having episodes every 2-3 months. I am interested in any information about medications, diets, etc. which have worked or others. Thank you.

I was just diagnosed a few months ago. Happy to have a name for it and groping at s raws to link with people who share my experience. My epsiodes last about 12 hours every two months or so. As long as my stomach is empty, I do not vomit at all. The strangest thing for me is that I do not come from a family with migraine history. Eithe I'm the first, or even this diagnosis is incorrect. But all my tests are perfect and I'm fine between bouts. Feel free to email me if you want to share stories.

Dear Ms Rhodes, I am so happy that there is someone out there who may have an understanding of what I have been going through; I can't even express it. If I have carried on too much in this email, I apologize in advance. I promise, there is no quiz at the end. I am a 40 year old single mom who, in my former life, was a maternal-child health nurse and OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner. I retired several years ago to pursue other interests. During my time as a professional caregiver, I was almost always involved in an academic environment. I like to think that I gave my very best to all of my patients, including the ones who presented puzzling challenges. About a year ago, I began having episodes of unexplained vomiting. The episodes are really quite remarkable for their: 1. [unbelievably] rapid onset 2. forceful, violent, character [ I've come to call them my 'Linda Blair' impersonations] 3. random, yet repeated, occurence 4. complete lack of any logical explanation 5. complete lack of any associated nausea 6. consistent occurence at night, and most often, following a good meal 7. complete lack of any positive findings from a progressive battery of tests. 8. relative consistency and similarity of episodes The third time I experienced an episode of unexplained vomiting, I was in Versaille, France, [having a lovely time celebrating my 40th birthday, I might add]. I spent hours 'rejecting' the most magnificent meal I ever had; $500.00 worth. Instead of continuing my trip to Washington DC and New York City as I had planned, I went home to see my HMO assigned primary care physician. He listened to my description of: *the Versaille 'episode', *the 'I-almost-got-killed-on-Interstate-5-one-night' episode and *the SUDDENLY-waking-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night episode He promptly worked me up for menopause, and considering that the only possible symptom I had of menopause was some hot flashes during these episodes' I thought it was kind of wierd to look at menopause first; after all, I spent 10 years as an OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner and had seen plenty of women go begin menopause without vomiting their brains out. In fact, I never heard of even one woman vomiting at all. But I wanted to be compliant so I went along with it. After recovering from the episode itself, as well as the jet lag, I realized I had RUQ pain that sometimes radiated toward my back. It seemed to 'settle' at the superior aspect of my R kidney but I wasn't really sure. Off I went for an ultrasound to check for gall stones. Through a series of events that perfectly describes 'bad care', I learned that the results of the ultrasound showed no gall stones, but did show a 4-5cm lesion---hemangioma---on my liver. I was assured that this was not causing this horrendous vomiting. Meanwhile, I had several more episodes; all of which were witnesses by a variety of reliably sane people. To say they were amazed, really, really understates how they felt about what they witnessed. I've never had any one ask me what they were supposed to do if *I* aspirated. Eventually, I was referred to a gastroenterologist with a pretty good reputation in the community. He ordered new tests each time I had an episode. To date these tests include: HIDA scan Upper GI with small bowel follow through Abdominal CAT scan ...remember, I also had bloodwork to rule out menopause which included LFT's and a CBC [but no amylase] ultrasound With the exception of the hemangioma on my liver, all of the tests were normal. My last episode was on Valentine's Day, another bad time to ruin my life. Generally, I start to feel better about three weeks after each episode, even though I'll still have some intermittent RUQ pain. It's also after about three weeks, that I begin to think this may have happened for the last time. Of course, I've always been wrong. I called my gastroenterologist on the Monday after the last episode; I was very tearful. I feel pretty confident that I don't have anything that will cause my early demise or cause any kind of commonly feared debilitation. However, as I spoke to my gastroenterologist's nurse that morning, I remember saying to her: 'Jane, I can't take this. It's ruining my life. I feel like a waliking time bomb; I don't want to go out to eat; I don't want to go far from home; I'm afraid to meet new people [if a stranger EVER EVER EVER witnessed this, I would surely die from embarrassment]; I'm afraid to get a new job; I might not be eligable for health insurance; PLEASE help me'. Dr. Block was very empathetic; very accomodating and very kind. But I don't think HMO doctors have the time for academic challenges. The best plan we could come up with was for me to show up at the emergency room during one of these episodes [HOW EMBARRASSING] so we can do whatever needs to be done WHILE I'm in the throws of the worst of it. Today, I finally worked up the nerve to look into this a little more closely for myself. I found you and the CVSA website. I'm not big on support groups [for myself], but I'm wondering if someone might be able to tell me a little more about the diagnosis process. I do have insurance, but I don't have a ton of money. I wonder if it's a diagnosis of exclusion. I wonder what ALL of the differntial diagnoses are and to what extent it's worth performing all the test necessary to exclude everything else. I wonder what the natural history of the disease is and what the prognosis is. I wonder if there is any associated long-term problems. You may have already become bored, perhaps you've heard this story a hundred times. if you have, that's good for me. It may finally be an answer...even if I don't like it. I live in Laguna Niguel, CA, in south Orange County. If you have any information for me, you can either email me, or cal: 949 495-6224 or you can send mail to: Lynne Hart. 25122 LaEstrada, Laguna Niguel, CA 92677. Thank You for your time Lynne

My daughter is getting very frustrated because this has been going on for approximately 15 or so years. As of yet no one has been able to tell her what is wrong. They've even gone as far as to say that maybe she was doing this to herself. She also suffers rom Chronic Epstein-Barre Virus as do myself, my husband and her 3 other sisters and sometimes just that alone makes it hard to get through the days because when that illness is in effect she is extremely fatigued and weak. It's hard for her to get things done but she manages. Then you add to that the incessant vomiting and it's enough to really drag you down physically and emotionally, especially when people think that there's nothing really wrong with you. she has even been told that "Maybe it's Psycholo ical". I was thrilled when told about this web site because I felt that at last maybe we can finally get some answers. I am sorry to have gone on so long but we are desperate. What doesn't help right now also is that she is 4 months pregnant and worried a out the baby because in the past 2 months she's had 3 episodes without ever losing the intense nausea. Yes I know part of it may be morning sickness but it's too severe to be just that. She's been in and out of the hospital a number of times in these past 2 months but they always send her home finally while she's still very sick. Thanks for letting me get rid of some of my emotional garbage about this.

I was diagnosed with Cyclic Vomiting at the age of 9-10, although I have had it since the age of 5. I am now 28 and continue to have these episodes, although the vomiting is not as frequent, the abdominal pain and lower back pain have progressively grown worse. Usually I would have an episode every 2-3 months for 4-5 days, like clockwork. I have had only 3 episodes in a span of 2 1/2 years, but have had 2 episodes in the last 4 months. I would like to know if there is any new medication that has worked in either delaying or shortening the episodes. Thanks; Tony

Dear Julie, BRAVO!!! Excellent job on new web page. Very needed and appreciated!!! Now many adults can find true answers to their medical concerns about CVS. THANK YOU! I am newly diagnosed with CVS. Would like to hear from any & all persons concerning medication protocol to formulate in my mind what might work. My CVS began with a pregnancy when I was 32. Been having episodes for 5 Yrs. now. ANY INFORMATION would be truly appreciated! Thanks & God Bless You All! Susan
