WHAT CAUSES
OCD

Current theories indicate that OCD is a biological disease, involving an imbalance of a chemical in the brain called serotonin. Serotonin is a naturally occurring chemical that sends impulses from one nerve cell to another. Medication may help correct this imbalance.

Although stress does not cause OCD, a stressful event like death of a loved one, birth of a child or divorce can trigger the onset of the disorder.

The OCD and Serotonin Link
Although the exact cause of OCD is unknown, the condition seems to be linked to low levels of a substance in the brain. This substance is serotonin.
