Excerpts from a very old,and hard to read book,titled simply,"Gone to Georgia"

JOHN TATE

"John Tate was born in Ireland in 1752. He came to America, when he was eleven years old, in 1763. His family settled in Cumberland, Pennsylvania. In 1776 he inlisted in the army and served in the Revolutionary War; After the war he moved to Baltimore, Maryland, then to Burke County North Carolina, and from there they moved to Franklin County, Georgia, in 1796; He had a wife called ,NANCY, and a son called,WILLIAM:

NOTE: ( From Wynell). The 1790 census, for North Carolina, lists a JONATHAN TATE, of Burke County, as having "four white males over sixteen, and two white females, in his household". Realize this about the old census taking; The four white males included the father, as in the two white females, one of them was the mother; Realize also that, a count of people living in one home was taken, but it did not define who they were in relationship to the head of the household; So, the other two white males could have been younger brothers, or nephews, or even servants; the same goes for the remaining white female, But in most cases it pertains to part of the emediate family; so we can safely assume that John had a wife,two sons over sixteen, and a daughter, back in 1790;

According to the above historical dates, JOHN 1, moved his family to Franklin County Georgia, in 1796; The earliest census that I could get of Georgia was,1820; It had one Tate listed. "WILLIAM", of Wilkinson County; Roll # 9- Page # 42;

In 1827, John , in a 'land draw', drew, Coweta County land; Granted, Dec.3,1821 . ANDREW A. TATE, also a revolutionary veteran of Franklin County, Virginia, in 1820 drew,'Early County', granted Aug.20,1821.

Andrew Tate of Wilkes County, North Carolina, bought land in Pendleton County, South Carolina, Feb.12,1794, and was enumerated there in 1800, along with , JAMES, ROBERT and SAMUEL TATE. (All three listed in S.Carolina census, of 1800;)

The Tate, families in and near Wilkes County, N. Carolina appear to have been closely related to the Tate families of Pennsylvania, Franklin County, Georgia, and near-by counties in Virginia; Some of the Tate families were associated with the families of MIDDLETON and WOOD, of southside Virginia ,those who moved to Elbert County, Georgia;

MICAJAH WILLIAMSON, who moved from Bedford County, Virginia, to Wilkes County, North Carolina, where he died in 1795; Some of his family was seated in Jackson County. He had a daughter,SALLY WILLIAMSON, who's second husband was , JUDGE CHARLES TAIT / Tate.

ROBERT TERRANT, ( Could be 'TENNENT') WOODS, of Franklin County, Ga. who at one time owned land in Jackson County, married, ANNE TATE; and there were other connections,(ie-marriages);

See-Pension Papers of ROBERT L. TATE, Va. MARY W. , 1330,BLWT-26729-160-55. Robert L.Tate was enumerated into Madison County, in 1820 , and was still there in 1840-age 76.

John, PO #332007,and a number of other Tate's with Virginia, and N.Carolina Servise; By 1785, several of the Virginia Tate's were taxed in Wilkes County Georgia (See tax records,1785); JAMES TATE ,having land in both Wilkes (Elbert) and Franklin Counties; In 1820,JOHN TATE was enumerated into Habersham County, Georgia. Many others of the Tate families were in Elbert, Greene, and other Georgia counties. James Tait / Tate left a will registered in Jackson County Ga."
