This page is dedicated to "GRANDPA CHADWICK", William Oscar, aka-"W.O."Chadwick. Father of 14 children, and 'boo-coo's' of grandchildren, (who can count them?) It is also dedicated to his descendants, who helped me get all the information and corrections for this page. b-abt.1835-40, in _____? He married POLLY ANN BROWN, (Some say her name was 'Pollyanna') abt-1858. Polly was a full-blooded American Indian , born on a reservation. I have not been able to find what tribe she came from. All I know is that she was from the same tribe as Pocahontas. I am told that Pocahontas' tribe originated in Florida;Note; I am told by a few members of the family that Polly was of the Cherokee nation, and I am told by others that she was not; I will have to research it in delpt to find out for sure; Polly lived to be 105 years old.She died in 1947-48, so she was born abt-1842-43.(Most of the information on Edd and Polly Ann , came from Pat Chadwick, and Verla Mae Chadwick, via Wanda (Smith) Reagen, and Pat.Thank you all.)
According to my mother: she said," that in either 1917, or 1927, Polly posed for a picture, in an advertisement for "Black Draught Tea", which was placed in the 'Farmers Almanac'.or the "Ladies Birthday Almanac" ;I sure would like to get a copy of that issue, if they keep a archive of old issues;
NOTE: Many people have asked what tribe of indians did Polly come from; Many say 'Cherokee', but that has since been ruled out; Most of our "word of mouth" information came from W.O Chadwicks sister Syble, and many years ago she told my mother ( Inez) the name of the tribe, but Mom forgot, and all she could remember was "that it started with a "C" and was a 'funny' name, and was the same tribe as Pocahontus came from;"
The tribe that Pocahontus came from is the "Chickahominy" tribe that settled on the Virginia coastline,(around the 1600's); They were Algonkian speaking indians; This is all I know until I research it farther;
Ed & Polly settled in Kentucky, before moving to Gatesville, Texas, near Waco, and lived there most of their married life. Polly died there. They had four children;
Not much is known about Edd Chadwick, other than stories that were passed on by his grand children; One that is most known, is that he was a very large and very strong man, and that he always wore a long over coat from his cival war days. His wife Polly was very small.They went by foot on all thier journeys, and he carried Polly, and put their baby in his big coat pocket,usually on trips to see her folks;
It is also told for truth that one day he was attacked by a black bear on one of his treks through the forest and he kicked the bear to death, without setting Polly or the baby down.Sounds like he knew ancient Karate.
Another story told of his strength, was during the cival war, he was trapped,and to escape from the Yankee's, he swam across the mighty Mississippi River, to safty,still wearing his long over coat. I would have really loved to have known the man.(these stories were passed down from Syble Chadwick,W.O Chadwicks sister, to Verla and Pat Chadwick, to me.)

(Edward).b-Dec.10,1861, in North Carolina. Died in 1946,in Waco,Texas. He married - FLORENCE GREY / GRAY, in 1884, in Georgia; Florence was born in 1852, in Dalton,Georgia,Murray County. She was a widow with two children from her previous marriage to Mr.Grey; I am trying to find the marriage records, to find out what her maiden name was..so far no luck. She had a daughter named Rosalie Grey, and a son, name unknown.
My mother,(Inez Chadwick) told a story that had been passed down through the family.".that Florence's first husband Mr. Grey, had been a very wealthy man.A plantation owner in Georgia; He had many acres of land and many slaves; So he left her and their two children fairly 'well off'. Florence had a brother who delved into politics, but had no great wealth of his own. He got pre-information that President Lincoln was going to free the slaves, which was not yet public knowledge. In those days in the south, your wealth was shown by how many slaves you owned. Florence's brother made a deal with his sister, that he would trade her slaves for land. (Where he got the slaves,nobody knows), so he kept trading her slaves until he owned quite a bit of her land. Then soon after the last trade, Lincoln freed the slaves, and Florence was left with no slaves, and very little land." She still had her plantation home , when she married Abraham Lincoln Chadwick;
'Abe' was a professional river boat gambler, which I am told had been very fashionable then, untill he had a family, and it was going out of voque anyway, so he became a farmer, and a bootlegger.
Mom(Inez) tells the story of one of her Grampa Abe's visits to them in Riverland Texas. "He had brought in a truck load of bootlegged whiskey, unbeknown to them. Abe went out the next morning to make his contacts, and while he was gone, the Sheriff and his deputy came and arrested Mama's Dad and older brother,(W.O and Albert Chadwick) for bootlegging the whiskey. Her Dad and brother knew nothing about it. The sheriff made a mistake, he arrested and took to jail Mom's dad and brother, but did not confiscate the whiskey. He intended to send some of his men back for it. While they were gone putting my grandfather and uncle in jail, Abe came back, got the whiskey, and delivered it, not knowing that Grampa ,(his son) had got arrested and went back to home; Grampa, and my uncle were released from jail the next day with all charges dropped. The reason? They had no proof, as the 'evidence' had been removed and sold."
Grampa loved to tell us grand children about his birth. He was born on the Gray's plantation in Georgia, and when he was born, his mother's milk went dry, so she allowed Grampa to be 'wet-nursed' by one of her negro slaves. Of course she was no longer a slave, but remained with Florence Gray as a trusted and much loved employee. Grampa always said that this was how we got our 'negro blood.' He did love to tease us kids.(LOL).

Florence died in 1904; Abraham married another Florence; FLORENCE KEITH, abt-1906-07, in Waco, Texas. She was quite a bit younger than Abe. She was only three years older than Abe's oldest son, William Oscar, who was already grown and nearly married by that time; Florence Keith was born abt-1884. Abe and Florence Keith had thirteen children together. Bringing the total of seventeen children that Abe sired, and counting his two step-children, that Abe raised, Abe fathered a total of nineteen children; He was quite a man !

'Josie' was a 'home-body, and deeply religious, 'W.O' was not, so the combination made for many funny stories passed down through the family; They had fourteen children. Thelma was the one reported to me that survived the family home fire, in late 1950's-early 60's;In his hurry to get home, because it was on fire, Dick collided with a fire truck, and received severe neck enjuries.He survived and so did his daughter Thelma. She currantly resides in Henrietta, Texas.

(Kathy/Florene/Joseph/W.O/Abraham/Edward); b-Sept.20,1969,in Midland,Texas;She was married, but has been divorced 3 years; She is engaged to be married to SHAWN MARCHMAN FREEMAN She has two sons by previous marriage; Shawn,-b-Dec.18,1962;He is a lab technician in a science labratory, that creates synthetic DNA. He also holds several degree's in music, and is presently teaching Chelley's two sons to play the drums, and Chelly, the guitar; Chelly is a secratary/office manager, for a electrical contracting office.She gratuated from Midland High School in 1988, and trade school in 1992; Shawn graduated from Midland Christian High in 1981; They met in church; Chelley's oldest son,Cole, was born two months early and with a tumor on his kidney; He was imediately flown to Childrens hospital in Dallas Tx., where they removed his entire right kidney. He was only two days old at the time of surgery. He is presently a very happy and healthy child with no health problems. He is truely one of God's miracles; Chelley enjoys working in her church, especially on the Missionette program; Her hobbies are reading, learning new things, and collecting Barbie dolls;

He was hit by a semi-truck on August 10,1999. He died a month later, on Sept.10,1999. He had his 96th birthday while in the hospital, in a coma. He is buried in Vashi Cemetary, Vashi, Texas. Evidently by selling tickets (presales), to thier Circus that they would soon be bringing to the town of Wetumka. Well the town turned out in full support, and all did contribute to the cause. They shelled out the money but the circus never came to town. They now have their "Sucker's Day', as a reminder of the occasion;

B.F was in poor health the last 10-12 years of his life. He had two brain surgerys correcting arteries, that had 'ballooned', out,and cut the blood flow to his brain. He recovered from them, only to get prostrate cancer. It regressed, and he 'recovered' from that, then he had circulation problems in his legs that required surgery. Most of his illness resulted from the surgeries and allergies to medication, and pneumonia. He was a Plumber and Steamfitter by profession.

He own quite abit of land in Muleshoe,Texas, Farwell County, near Amerillo. After years of farming he and his wife Joy Lee, divided the land up between thier three children, to manager and they became Missionaries, and traveled the countries, spreading the Word of the Lord; Joy Lee developed Alzhiemers Disease, and cut their career short. It developed so fast, Markum was forced into putting her in a home, where she would get the best of care. Markum died, in 1988, from cancer. Joy Lee died a couple of years later, I am not sure on the dates of death. There were outstanding people,so kind and caring.Markum was almost nine years older than me, and we had a wonderful close relationship, when I was a child. I can remember when Markum was around, fifteen and I was around six or seven, Markum got thrown from a horse, and broke his hip. He was laid up in bed for ages. When he got bored he would have Grampa come and get me, and I would stay, a couple of days, and 'took care of him', ( I thought I was). Grandma said I stayed in the bed with him, drawing pictures, playing cards, etc, and waited on him hand and foot. He always called me his "little nurse". I can remember part of being there with him. He was always so good to me. Being the only girl in the family ,at the time, I was teased unmercifully, but Markum nor his two younger brothers ever teased me.Oh they did, but in a sweet, kind way. I adored my four younger uncles, (Chadwicks);B.F, ( I called him 'Butch'), J, we called 'Fat',and Markum and George.

In 1950, Grandma Chadwick sent me the names and birthdays of all her Children. On this list she had 'J', as 'James Arlie', and my mother, Inez Chadwick, also told me that 'J ' was James Arlie. But his family tells me that it was simply a 'J ' no name. So I will go by 'J ', as his wife has all his Navy records,marriage certificates,etc..So 'J ' it will remain. I never knew his name because all his life we called him 'Fat'. He got that knickname, not because he was fat, for he never was,but from an incident that happened when he was a baby. The story goes; " When Fat was a few months old, Grandma took naps with the children. She had Fat in the bed with her. When she woke up he was still asleep, so she told one of the older boys to watch him, and call her when he woke up. I was told that the son who was put in his care was B.F, but I think it was either Albert or Dick, as B.F would have only been about two years old at the time. Any way, Fat woke up and promptly fell off the bed, getting a big bump on his forehead. B.F, Albert or Dick, which ever, called his mother and she said,"Well pick him up and I'll be there in a minute". Which the boy did, but he put him back on the bed, and Fat promptly crawled off again, getting another lump on the other side of his head. The boy went running to his mother and said, 'The baby has a 'fathead'. For years he was called 'Fathead', then shortened to just 'Fat'. It was kinda cute when he married Patsy..they were Fat and Pat. Fat spend four years in the Navy at the end of World War 2; They had three children.
