The definition of disease can drastically shift
from
era to era, or even from year to year. Female hysteria, for example,
seemed a very real illness to 18th- and 19th-century physicians but has
since vanished from medical books. Other ailments, like Lyme disease
and chronic fatigue syndrome, are now considered bonafide diagnoses --
although that wasn't always the case.

sufferers can fight back ChronicleHerald.ca,

This is not to imply that the pain is "all in the head" in an imagined
way, but more on a psychosomatic — or psychophysiological
—
level. We know that what is in the head can affect the body in a very
real and damaging way. It is important to understand and manage the
mind-body unity with proper emotional and psychological support. With
the mind and body at war with each other, it’s no wonder that
sufferers find it difficult to fathom taking on an exercise routine.
But this might be one of the tactics to help lessen the effect of the
syndrome.

... Still, Sullivan credits his talent for technology to an illness
that many would call a setback. In high school Sullivan was diagnosed
with fibromyalgia, a physical disorder that enhances pain and fatigue
in the body’s soft tissue. A full night of sleep leaves
Sullivan
feeling as if he’s spent two hours in the gym. The condition
forced him to quit one of his favorite activities, soccer, because of
the pain it caused.
Muscles that most people never feel are acutely felt by Sullivan.
Sitting through classes is tough, he said, but he has “a
beast of
a computer chair” that can be adjusted in just about any way
to
help relieve the pain. Sullivan has learned to see the good in his
condition. “It’s one of those things, it
sucks,” he
said. “But I don’t think I’d be doing all
the good
things I’m doing right now if I didn’t have
it.” ...

Marly Silverman had a high-energy job as a financial consultant to a
major U.S. bank, until she came down with a viral infection that she
couldn't seem to shake. She was exhausted all the time, ran a low-grade
fever and, lost weight, and then the neurological symptoms began. "I
would be driving on I-95 and forget where I was going -- not a good
thing," said Silverman, 52, of Pompano Beach. It took several months,
but eventually she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, the
Rodney Dangerfield of diagnoses. ... "There's no
single
treatment that fixes the illness, but there are treatments that do help
significantly -- increasing the function of the patient, and allowing
them to engage in normal activities of daily living," she [Klimas]
said. "It's critical for patients and their health care providers to
know that there is hope and that we can help." Reprinted

Researchers at U of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are using hypnosis to
ease pain. Research shows the technique may actually change the way the
brain processes pain. "Hypnosis is effective probably in the range 65
to 70 percent," Sebastian Schulz-Stubner, M.D., Ph.D., an
anesthesiologist at University of Iowa, tells Ivanhoe. Scott Brady,
M.D., founder of the Brady Institute for Health/Florida Hospital in
Orlando, Florida, says stress can overload the body and make pain
worse. His program has patients journal, meditate and exercise. "I was
skeptical. All my patients are skeptical," he says. "There's hope. Give
it a try; you're going to get better." Dr. Brady says there are five
pain-prone personalities. The perfectionist has something to prove. The
people-pleaser worries about being accepted. The legalist has to be
right. The stoic holds back real feelings. And the fear-prone expects
the worst. After completing the program, AK went from barely able to
get out of bed to riding her jet ski with her family. "It's just given
me answers, and it's given me hope," she says.

WOMEN are no more likely to get chronic fatigue syndrome than men, nor
are neurotic types more prone, according to new myth-debunking
Australian research. Chronic fatigue syndrome is most commonly
triggered by an acute illness, like glandular fever, and it is the
severity of this illness that decides whether you will develop the
syndrome, the research found. “The sicker you are at the
beginning of the infection, the more likely it is to result in a
prolonged illness,” said UNSW infectious diseases specialist
Andrew Lloyd. “As far as we can see this is the only
determinant
of who is likely to get it.” The research team made its
discovery
by tracking the long-term health of individuals infected by three
infections — the mosquito borne Ross River virus, Q fever
bacterial infection and Epstein-Barr virus, which causes glandular
fever — in Dubbo. “These three different bugs
trigger this
fatigue in 10 per cent of people from moment one, of day one, of the
acute infection,” Prof Lloyd said.

[Maneuver] Options ... were to cross their legs and tense their leg,
abdominal and buttock muscles; handgrip, which consisted of maximal
voluntary squeezing of a rubber ball; and arm tensing, by gripping one

Great description of ME/CFS, then:
Surprisingly, for someone whose youth has been blighted by illness,
Nicola is not bitter.
“I believe my illness has been here to teach me things. I
have
learned so much. I know that who I am is not defined by my external
achievements. Prior to getting ill that was all I ever had, external
achievements and external factors to determine whether I thought myself
a worthwhile person.
“When those things got taken away, there was nothing left but
an
empty shell, an empty shell who had a lot of learning to do; ME is a
devastating illness to have as a teacher, but looking back, it has
taught me well.”
Acceptance of her illness was part of the learning process, and Nicola
believes that only once this occurred did she begin to heal.

change. Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and

genetic makeup that made them less able to adapt to life stresses,
including illness and disease." and
"One thing he [Dr. Frank

residency that Pellegrino began suffering severe, unexplained aches and
pains around his shoulders. At first, he attributed the problem to long
resident hours and wearing a coat that was laden with heavy items. He
changed coats; the pain didn't stop. Finally, he was diagnosed with
fibromyalgia. The encouraging news was that he could still be a doctor.
... Pellegrino said he drew on his experience coping with
hearing
loss to help him learn to accept chronic pain. ``I think having my
hearing impairment has better enabled me to cope with fibromyalgia,
because they're both chronic conditions, they both interfere...'' he
said. ``But, there are things you can do.'' '

... However, Dr. Stephen A. Siegel, clinical assistant professor or
medicine NYU School of Medicine's division of cardiology, is concerned
that general recommendations for an entire population are not
appropriate, because just as people have different metabolisms, they
have different sodium excretion rates. "Salt excretion during the day
is influenced by many factors -- daily activity, environmental
conditions," like heat and humidity, "renal function and overall fluid
intake," he said. Anecdotally, Siegel has seen some young vegetarians
who maintain low-salt diets and exercise vigorously outdoors during the
summer months who complain of headaches and muscle fatigue. Often,
adding salt to their diet improves their symptoms. Additionally, Siegel
said, people who suffer from neuro-cardiogenic syncope, or vaso-vagal
fainting, require excessive amounts of salt or hormones to restrict
sodium excretion to decrease the frequency of fainting episodes.

Fatigue Is in the Genes, Study Finds LA
Times - April 21, 2006
Mutations are to blame for a syndrome often scoffed at as imaginary,
researchers say.
Abstract: Chronic fatigue syndrome, often dismissed as the imaginings
of depressed and whiny people, is caused by genetic mutations that
impair the central nervous system's ability to adapt to stressful
situations, according to a major new study by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. Chronic fatigue syndrome, commonly known as
CFS, was first recognized in the 1980s but was long dismissed as the
complaint of "a bunch of hysterical, upper-class white women," said Dr.
William C. Reeves of the CDC, who led the new study. The teams also
found a strong correlation between the severity of CFS and what they
called allostatic load, the cumulative wear and tear on the body
resulting from chronic or inadequate adaptation to stressors -- such as
changes in everyday routine, disease, and physical and emotional trauma.

Painkillers Blunt Immune Response, New Research Indicates [ Dec-20-2006
]
Using a common painkiller such as aspirin or ibuprofen (AdvilR,
MotrinR, etc.) "might not be a good idea" around the time of a flu shot
or other inoculation, according to a new report from vaccine
researchers at the University of Rochester (New York). In particular,
you probably should avoid taking one for pain at your injection site.
These widely used drugs, known as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs), appear to interfere with the body's immune
response, and particularly with the intended production of antibodies
after a vaccination.
"Overwhelming"
Evidence Legitimizes Fibromyalgia Pain [ Dec-20-2006 ]
Inability to point to test-verified evidence of their pain or its cause
has been a harsh reality for patients with Fibromyalgia and other pain
syndromes. Aside from FM specialists, the medical profession and the
public in general often do not believe that 'pain can be very severe '
and 'sometimes untreatable' “ in a person who does not seem
to be
injured," observes FM expert Richard Gracely, PhD. 1
Garlic
- the immune support natural [ Dec-13-2006 ]
Many folks with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia suffer from
chronic infections. Garlic is a remarkable food source with an
incredible spectrum of activity against bacteria, fungal infections,
and viruses. Now, with new and stable formulations available, garlic
supplements can be used to combat infections naturally, according to
chemist Peter Josling, Director of the Garlic Center in Sussex, England
and author of the book, Allicin: The Heart of Garlic.
Correcting
Disordered Sleep in CFS [ Dec-13-2006 ]
Inadequate sleep quantity and quality are well known to cause a variety
of different biochemical and physiological changes, and are a key part
of the vicious cycle of CFS. It is imperative to do everything possible
to optimize sleep quantity and quality.
The
Role of Infection in Initiating ME/CFS [ Dec-13-2006 ]
While the question of what causes ME/CFS is logically the first
question on people's minds, it is almost an inappropriate question. It
has occupied many years of research on the illness, and has caused
enormous confusion, yet now fades to the background because it is
becoming apparent that it is almost irrelevant. And the difficulty in
finding "a cause" has been one of the prime reasons that people have
doubted the reality of this illness.

Dr.
David Bell on 'Intravenous Fluid as a Treatment for ME/CFS' [
Nov-29-2006 ]
The newsletter today is my first discussion of intravenous saline as a
treatment agent for ME/CFS. I have now been using this treatment for
nearly six years and wish to share my thoughts. While I plan to be
open, honest and even blunt about this treatment, I will not compromise
the confidentiality of the patients treated. I have nothing to sell,
and I am not encouraging this treatment, as it has not been rigorously
tested. However, I do not think I am witnessing a placebo response, and
all things considered, it is the most effective treatment for severe
ME/CFS that I have found in my 21 years of looking. But it has serious
drawbacks and risks.
The
Danger in Sleeping Pill Advertising: Reading Beyond the Lines [
Nov-29-2006 ]
Some American consumers, encouraged by increasingly heavy advertising
of prescription sleep drugs, may be assuming unnecessary risk because
they're ill informed about the pro's and con's of these
"sedative/hypnotics" versus other means of coping with sleep problems.
So says the latest in a series of drug comparisons that the
independent, nonprofit Consumer Reports organization (CR) has produced
as part of a public Drug Effectiveness Review Project.

is. Her patient handout "based on the work of several eminent

Women are no more likely to get Chronic Fatigue Syndrome than men, nor
are neurotic types more prone, according to new myth-debunking
Australian research.* Scientists from the University of Sydney and the
University of New South Wales (UNSW) have discovered who is most likely
to get the debilitating condition, and it has nothing to do with age,
sex, personality traits, or mental health as many people thought.
