MOUSE PROBLEMS
The usual mouse is sensitive to
light and electrostatic charges.
The light problem is easily avoided. The
sensitivity can be tested by directing a strong light from a desk lamp
onto the mouse.
Check
that the small black rollers inside the mouse are clean.
The electrostatic problem is solved by
making an earthed mouse mat.
It is not clear to me just where the
electrostatic charges come from and how they effect the mouse but will
stop
the pointer moving
smoothly or may not move it past some positions.
I suspect the cause may be the movement of
ones shoes on a synthetic carpet below the desk, or from the ball
inside the mouse. That the ball
can hold a charge can be shown by removing it from the mouse and rubbing
it
against a dry synthetic
cloth and bringing it close to small pieces of tissue paper.
A very good earthed mat can be
made by folding a piece of aluminium foil over a piece of thin cardboard - a
piece
from the side of a
wine cask is about right - and using a few staples to connect a length of thin
wire to the
the aluminium
foil. The other end of the wire is connected to one of the screws at the back of
the computer.
A piece of
printer paper is then folded over this laminate.
Better earthing is achieved by brushing the
back of the paper with a detergent solution and allowing it to dry.
The paper could also be blackened
with ink or water paint. A good surface is plastic paint.
Leave about 5 mm of al. foil uncovered at
the near edge of the mat to earth the user.
Does the CD player make a strange
noise ?
My problem was
found to be finger marks (which contain oil) being transferred to the
inner driving circle of the disc.
It could be better to have finger marks
on the playing area than the centre. A very thin smear of a thin solution
of
rosin in methylated
spirit on the centre driving surface seems to have fixed it.
If your printer
is left unused for days at a time and the ink cartridge is easy to remove, then
keep it in a small jar
in a
sealed roomy plastic bag along with a wad of tissue saturated with water
.
