From MSNBC News Briefs: Los Angeles County DHS hushes Lyme Disease rumors DHS hushes Lyme Disease rumors LOS ANGELES, July 20 [1998]- A county official denied Monday that a tick was found in the Southland that showed evidence that it might be carrying Lyme disease. "We have found none . . . Some people have reported having Lyme disease but we haven't found any," said Sharon Wanglin of the county Department of Health Services. That was contrary to a weekend report that county officials did find a tick carrying the disease that can produce skin rash, headaches, fever and eventual heart damage if left untreated. Wanglin said there is always a chance that there are ticks in Los Angeles County carrying the disease, but "I'm not aware that we ever have found one."
