FACTS ON OVARIAN CANCER &
|
Ovarian Cancer Risk Factors Familial Ovarian Cancer Genetic changes (mutations) in the DNA of some women may make them more likely to develop ovarian cancer. These genetic changes can be passed from generation to generation so that they are present in family members. Ovarian cancer risk is ~3 times higher if a close relative has had ovarian cancer. Risk increases with additional family members who have had cancers, especially ovarian or breast cancer. Click here for more information about hereditary ovarian cancer syndromes. Genetic counseling and testing may be appropriate for those who think that they are at higher risk. Some cases of ovarian cancer are associated with Hereditary Non-polyposis Colorectal Cancer (also known as Lynch syndrome II). Affected or Lynch syndrome II at-risk women may benefit from consulting with their physician.
