Chester graduated from William Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa, taught two years at Olney Friends School, Barnesville, Ohio, then completed graduate work at Columbia University. About 1935, he and his family spent a year in Puerto Rico where he studied fungi which cause human disease. From 1936 to 1967 he was in charge of a labratory at the National Institutes of Health, investigating pathogenic fungi and testing antibiotics. 1964 found him touring Africa and Europe for the World Health Organization. In 1966, retirement began with a trip around the world, with stops at Yugoslavia and Japan at medical conferences. The following year they spent three months at a hospital in eastern Peru.

A 1930 fund-raising appeal from Scattergood Friends School states that "Chester W. Emmons is associate mycologist in the new medical center at Columbia University. He is completing work for his Ph. D. this spring."
