Passed away on Wednesday morning May 21, 2003. Norman was born August 21, 1918 in Kalamazoo, the son of Max and Sarah (Reingold) Besbris, and had been a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and Western Michigan University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, attended Officers Candidate School, served 22 months overseas in Europe, and was discharged as a Captain. Returning from the service, Norman joined the family business, Max Besbris & Sons Meat Packers, where he was co-owner with his brother, Stanley for many years. Norman was a member of the Congregation of Moses, the B'nai B'rith, the Kalamazoo Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge. He was also an avid golfer, enjoyed all sports and was known for his great sense of humor. On November 21, 1943 he was united in marriage to the former Celia H. Halpert, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Randie Levin of Detroit, Terry (Jeffrey) Paule of Laguna Niguel, CA, David (Nina) Besbris of Valley Village, CA, Debra (Seth) Strichartz of Los Altos, CA; six grandchildren, Sarah, Melinda, Max, Elena, Emily and Libby; a brother, Stanley (Gloria) Besbris of Kalamazoo; a sister, Bedonna (Ben) Ashapa of Brockton, MA; in-laws, Bernice Weiner of Grand Rapids, Sam (Rosalie) Halpert of Kalamazoo; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a son-in-law, Gerald Levin. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. with Rabbi Harvey Spivak officiating. Interment will follow in Jewish Riverside Cemetery.
