George Xu, OMD Traditional Chinese Medicine Specialist

George Xu, OMDAllow me to take the opportunity to thank you for your interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Some of you may already know a great deal about TCM, where many of you may only know a little. This page was designed to provide for you general information about my background and my qualifications, whereas the links on this page provide general information concerning the two most popular branches of Chinese Medicine- herbal remedies and acupuncture. You will also find a contact page for any additonal questions you may have about my practice, setting appointments, or Traditional Chinese Medicine in general.

I was born in Guangzhou (formerly Canton), a harbor city in southern China. My family has a long history of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and for three generations had practiced professionally. Growing up in this environment had a profound influence on me, and I began learning the practice early, at age 14. For several years I was taught by my father at his clinic. At age 18, I left to attend Guangzhou Traditional Chinese Medical College, one the most prestigious medical colleges in China. Here I stayed for five years, until graduating. During that time period I had the opportunity to study up close and extensively with some of the finest specialist from various styles of Chinese Medicine. Combining the education I received from my family with the training and experiences of medical college, I was ready to practice on my own.

I came to the United States in 1983, initially staying in Vermont under a student exchange. Although I enjoyed my time there, I did not find the weather there especially appealing, so I moved to Atlanta in 1987. I eventually established a Chinese Medical Clinic in Chamblee (north Atlanta) in 1994. Soon after, I was able to set up a second office in Doraville.

Generally, people come to my clinic for chronic problems that have been unresolved for several years by Western medicine. They search for an alternative solution. They also come for acute conditions and general health concerns that Traditional Chinese Medicine is well-equipped and designed to diagnose. Usually, there is an initial consultation using the five diagnostics refered to on the herbal medicine page, afterwhich an individualized prescription will be given.Chamblee Office
Traditional Chinese Medicine is holistic and integrated. My aim is to cure the whole person and reestablish balance.
As you continue throughout my web site, I hope that it to be an informative and enjoyable experience. Remember that I am always available for whatever questions or concerns you may have.

Suiting the medicine to the illness
(Suiting the Medicine to the Illness)

Hua Tuo was a famous physician who lived at the end of the Han Dynasty. Once two prefectural officials Ni Xun and Li Yan came to see him together, both complaining of headache and fever. Hua Tuo examined them carefully and wrote out two prescriptions for them: an obstruction-clearing remedy for Ni Xun and a fever-dispersing remedy for Li Yan. After taking Hua Tuo's medicines, both were cured. People asked Hua Tuo why he had given them different medicines when they had the same complaint. Hua Tuo explained, "There was nothing wrong with Ni Xun externally. His illness came from indigestion inside of him. Li Yan was alright inside. His illness came from cold from the outside. That is why I treated them differently."
