Fire Safety
Babies can't run from fires!
Fire safety tips:
-
Test your smoke detectors every month and change the batteries once
a year. It may be easier to remember if you schedule this as your
baby's birthday!
-
Make your home a smoke-free home!
-
Avoid having electric wires and cords under rugs and carpets.
-
Use flame-resistant sleep-wear. Of course, use common sense
and avoid putting stuff like asbestos over your baby - that's just stupid!
-
HAVE A FIRE ESCAPE PLAN! Pre-determine:
-
Who will get the baby.
-
How many ways are there to get out of the room.
-
Where you will meet outside.
-
Keep space heaters at least 3 feet waway from anything that can
catch fire. Note that in year 2000, the media has reported many fires
that have been attributed to space heaters that weren't being used safely.
-
Never use an oven to heat the house.
-
If you use space heaters, wood stoves and/or fireplaces,
use screens around them. These things may spark and spit out
flames or chunks of burning materials.
-
Blow out all candles before leaving the room.
-
Keep halogen lamps away from curtains, walls and anything else that
may catch fire.
-
In case of fire, leave the house with the children first. Then call
911 from a neighbor's phone
