Jan. 12th: day 7

Today I discovered a really fun place called Mama's house. It's a student hangout near school. Another weird thing I noticed about Mexicans is that it is nearly impossible to tell how old they are by looking at them. They don't age like real people. Well, not that they aren't real people, but I mean normal people. Wait no, they ARE normal, but you know what I mean. AAARGH forget it. Anyways, there is a high school nearby, and they use our facilities sometimes, so there are a few high school kids around the campus once in a while. It has already happened twice that I asked a high school kid for directions to a class. It is so hard to tell who is in university and who is in high school.

At night we went to a club called La Historia. It was pretty good, these Mexicans know how to have a good time. it was my first time going downtown, because the city is so big, and I live in the South. It takes forever to get anywhere - not just the distance, but the traffic is really bad. I was a little disapppointed with downtown. It's nothing like Montreal. It was really dead. Near the clubs there were people, but besides that, it was quiet. I am used to blocks and blocks of traffic and hundreds of people everywhere. It is because evereything is so spread out. I hear it is pretty busy during the day, though.

Jan. 11th: day 6

URGENT MESSAGE! Someone please send air, fast! I can't breathe over here! When doing any kind of physical activity, it is extremely hard to breathe because of the high altitude and thin air. I played basketball today, and let's just say I am not quite used to the air. I wasn't even tired, just completely out breath, even after 15 minutes!! I guess it will take longer than I thought to adjust to it.

Well, despite the fact that I woke up at 5:30 in the morning, and the fact that I can't get any air in to my lungs, I'd rate this day among the Top Ten best days ever! The weather was beautiful and I woke up in time, God only knows how. I got picked up at 6:45, got my shoes shined right outside school, for like 2 pesos or something, then went to class. It was the first day of classes, and my teachers are really cool. I met a ton of people again in class, and learned some more Spanish. After class, I ate lunch, and fell asleep in the grass. I woke up, surfed the net, went to my other class. After I finished class, I went for a walk, then went to play some basketball. Then I ate again, sent out some emails, then went to the weight room. Finished there, ate supper, and did today's update. Now I am going home to bed!

What more can a man ask for in a day?!?!?

Jan. 10th: day 5

So I'm getting used to the Mexican ways a bit. These people don't seem to care about anything. They are more neutral than . Switzerland. They are so carefree and have no worries. I don't understand how they afford anything. For example, if a person is earning minimum wage here, and they talk on their cell phone for 20 minutes a week, they just spent half their paycheck!! The phone itself is about 1 month's pay at minimum wage for the cheapest phone available, the Nokia 5100. A person would have to save 100% of their mimum wage paycheck for 10 YEARS just to buy a dodge neon!

Jan. 9th: day 4

I saw my first cloud today. It even rained for a few minutes, but the rest of the day was nice. They say rain at this time of year is very rare. I joined a gym today. I also am signing up for volleyball and basketball and tennis. I should be in very good shape if all goes well. The gym facility here is amazing, I have never seen anything like it.

I have a good schedule, and everything is right at school so it is very convenient. I have class M-W-F 1- 2pm, and Tues/Thurs 7 am (?!?!) to 2:30 pm. Dont even ask how I will get up that early! But I will have to get used to it, because my driver will be coming to my house EVERY morning at 6:45 am. Its ok if i go early on M-W-F, because i will train or play whatever sport i have that day. At least I will get home early.

Today was another good day, i just stayed at school, no class, and wrote emails, made up for some lost surfing time and got info about sports and stuff. I went to the movies today too. It is so cheap here! its 5 bucks, adult anytime, and even less on cheap Wednesdays. you would love it! I saw Men of Honor. It is okay, i guess.

Jan. 8th: day 3

I went to school today for the first time. It is really amazing. It is soooo beautiful. The architecture is really nice, and there is so much open space. The campus in enormous, maybe 20 times bigger than Concordia. The people are so nice to foreign students. They treat us so well here.

The school is the most prestigious school in all of mexico. It is very expensive, so only the elite mexican students can afford it. It is very safe and security is top notch. I left at 7pm, and a guard walked me 2 blocks to my taxi. It totally wasn't necessary, but they insist. Also, only certain taxis are allowed to drive students from my school. There were problems of taxis driving students into a dark alley and robbing them, so now only taxis that are approved to be safe can take students.

They have high speed connections everywhere, for students to plug in their laptops, even outside!! They even lend you wireless networks cards, so you can walk and surf! It is so nice to go lie the grass and send emails and surf! The connection here are restricted, from adult sites, mp3s, movies, etc. But i met this guys who is a network expert, and knows the schools network very well. He configured my comp to go around some restrictions, but not all. I have not really tried it out yet, but he was really cool. His name is Jorge.

The weather is nice here, but it gets really cold at night inside the house. It is because they have no heating, and the houses have no insulation and are made of stone, so it gets freezing. I sleep with 3 blankets! I am sure I'll get used to it soon. I know what you guys are thinking - "I can't believe he is complaining!" But trust me, the houses are much colder than over there. However, the daytime is amazing. Very sunny, not too hot, like around 21-25 degrees, just perfect.

A friend came to school with me today, but he left early. It was pretty interesting, me trying to get home, not knowing where I live, and unable to explain to the driver how to get there! He got me pretty close, so I just got out and walked for the last fifteen minutes. Hahahah that was pretty funny!

I spoke to someone about an apartment today. I will be checking a few places out during the week. I have met students from all over the world today at orientation. This has been an amazing experience so far. I really miss home though. I feel quite lonely here. It's amazing how you feel when you can't be near the people you love. Even though I am making friends and meeting so many people, it's just not the same.

I can't believe it's only been a few days. It feels like I have been gone forever.

Anyways, it's only 10:30, but I have had a long day, so I will go to bed now.

Jan. 7th: day 2

Today was a complete waste of a day. I woke up at 12, but no one else was awake, so I was bored and fell back asleep till 2:30. Then I got up, we just chilled, and had breakfast at 5pm. It's crazy how these people spend all their time eating. After everyone finishes eating, they sit at the table for like 2 hours! It drives me nuts. I go stir crazy, I just want to get up and do something.

I've come to the conclusion that the father is one of the nicest and most intelligent people in Mexico. I really like this family. The girls actually call me their brother. Like, they will say to other people, "this is my host brother." Or they would, if they had any friends other than their bfs. I haven't seen any, in any case. It's weird over here. They don't keep contact with people like we do. For example, there is only one phone in the whole house, with 2 girls in their 20's. That is crazy! You'd think they would fight over it, but they never use it, and I don't think it has ever rang so far. It's going to be weird if I make friends- how will they call me or me call them? I like it here, but I still have not decided if I will stay or not. We will see how it goes, and I will find out about apartment costs next week. Also, a noisy 5-year-old isn't the best study environment. Especially if I start playing with her, the whole day is gone. Kids are a worse distraction than TV and internet!

I ventured out on my own at night for the first time. Wow. I might not be doing that again anytime soon. I was completely lost, and didn't understand anything at all. We went to play pool after I found my way back home. I really suck now. I haven't played in so long. It is really cheap to play pool here, like 2$ an hour or something like that. I think I will take this opportunity to become good again.

On a more somber note, I witnessed my first Mexican death today. There was a car accident, and we came upon it soon after. The person was dead, from what I was told. The drivers here are by far the worst I have ever seen. People think Mtl and new york are bad? Forget it, not even close. They are so aggressive, it's crazy. Crossing the street is really hard, because there aren't lights for pedestrians. I'm really scared crossing the street. You literally have to run across the street.

Also, cars just go whenever they feel like it. The cops don't give a shit about speeding and blowing red lights and stuff. If it is red, but no cars going the other way, you better go or people will honk. Also, they are so impatient, don't signal, etc.... You cannot have a nice car here, it's too crazy. I don't think that even I would drive a car here. I haven't driven in four days. I miss it. I wonder if I'll forget how.

It's been 2 days of pure Mexican feasts, and my stomach is holding up just fine. I also haven't had any problems with burning eyes yet. One thing that did get to me a bit was the thin air. I had a headache yesterday, but I took 2 Mexican Tylenol, and it was gone in 5 minutes. I get tired very fast here. I guess its the shortage of oxygen. Like if I go for a fast walk, I am out of breath very fast.

My orientation starts tomorrow. I'm curious to see what this school is like...

Jan. 6th: day 1, part II

Its now 5:15 am. We went to a club, but didn't get in, cause the line was too long. It's weird here. No one knows each other, I guess due to the population. When you go out, you are with whoever you went with, unlike Mtl, where you see a million people you know.

So we ended up at this cheesy bar, where they play rock and stuff. It was weird, but a very cool experience. I actually had fun, I must admit. These people know how to have a good time. They don't care how they look or who is watching, it's a nice change. They also love to drink. Freakin' alcoholics, I tell you.

I heard some guy talking perfect English, so I went up to him and said "how come you speak such good English?" Guess what? Turns out he is Canadian! That was pretty cool too. I have pictures with him, too. I'm telling you, this camera was such a great idea, I take it everywhere, and am getting shots of everything.

I have learned so much Spanish in the 1 day I have been here, it's crazy. I should be fluent pretty quick. Anyways, I need sleep.

Jan. 6th: Day 1

Today is my first day here, so I am exhausted after the flight. Ok so I get off the plane last night, and they made me fill out this long form for students, but it was in Spanish. When I told them I don't understand, they said that it was my problem. What kind of counry is this? Anyways, after a while, someone helped me. after all that, I take my bags, but they don't let you take carts into the area where people pick you up, so I had to carry all 3 bags alone. So far, I'm not a happy camper. I get there, and no sign of the family. Well, obviously, I was 4 hours late! I try to call, but their pay phones do not accept change here! You must have a Mexican calling card. Anyways, I find one that takes credit cards, but the people showed up as I was calling.

So what are they like? First of all, they are sooooo smart! Well educated, and very nice people- good-hearted and kind. They appear to be quite well off, at least for Mexicans.

So I get up at 11am, and go for breakfast. I had quesadillas and a burrito with beans and salsa! No cereal and toast here! Hahhaha I like it. It was a special holiday here yesterday, where gifts are given to the children, like at Christmas, so the gifts I brought were very well-timed. So they have this tradition, where there is this huge cake, and somewhere inside the cake, there is a little figurine, and whoever gets that piece, is the one who gets to buy the gifts for everyone during the next holiday, in February. I took the smallest piece possible, maybe 1/100th of the cake, and I got the figurine. They were so happy, it was pretty cool. It's like an honor. I am getting along with them very well so far.

The two older sisters are very nice. The house is really packed, because both their boyfriends are here, and they each have a friend with them. For now, we are like 10 people in the house. Believe it or not, we did just fine with 1 shower! Their bfs are pretty cool- kinda gives me someone to hang out with. The 21-year-old has the same b-day as me! So that should be cool, come feb.

The oldest sister, Teresa has a bf that looks exactly like Dave Bensmihen. It's really amazing, they talk the same way, same mannerisms, and even the same glasses almost. I always call him Dave by accident.

The people here are extremely friendly. People just come up to you and make conversation, especially when they hear the accent. And I haven't felt any pollution yet. They also say it's extremely crowded, but from what I saw, not much worse than Mtl.

Anyways, they are going to take me out tonight, so I will let you know how the nightlife is here.

Jan. 5th: Day 0

Hey! Guess where I am right now? Actually, I'm not sure myself, but I am on the plane somewhere between Newark and Mexico. I just ate- we had a choice between steak and shrimp. I went with the shrimp and it was actually pretty good. Im surprised- good airline food?

There was a short delay from Dorval, like 20 minutes. Ok, so I get on the plane, and it is the smallest plane I have ever seen in my life. 1 seat on the right side, 2 on the left, about 19 rows in total. The space between the rows was half that of a normal plane, and I could not stand up fully straight because my head touched the roof! Thank god it was only a 45 minute flight! After the 45 mins flight, I have a 2 hour stop in Newark, and then we switch to a bigger plane. There was only one stewardess on the way to Newark, this huge fat black lady. She was the biggest bitch ever. She told off like 3 people for no reason! Once again, thank god it was a short flight!

So we land at Newark late, becuase we could not get clearance to land because of the weather. A storm was starting. I have never been to Newark, so I was excited to see what is was like. I should have known what was to come right from the start. As soon as I got off at Newark, I saw a few women, on diferent occasions, crying with police/security guards. I assume they were robbed.

Its a very nice airport, but the people are so mean. I have never met so many unfriendly people in my life. I was bored, so I was just walking around the stores and the airport making conversation with people. These people are just plain rude. Most of them couldn't even understand what I was saying. I guess its the accent, since they talk with a very thick american accent, and i dont, they could not follow what I was saying. Also, everyone is Spanish there!!! I couldnt believe it! There were even store clerks that only spoke Spanish! In new jersey?!?!?! What the hell??

So I check the flight, and its also 20 mins delayed, which was good since I was late arriving in Newark, it gave me time to find the gate and stuff. But every few minutes, the flight kept getting delayed another 20-30 minutes. I couldn't leave the gate because they kept saying it would be a few more minutes. The next thing I know, 4 hours passed and still no plane!!! The storm was getting really bad, and no planes could take off or land. Planes were being rerouted to Boston and stuff. People were starting to sleep on the floor.

Finally, I couldnt take the hunger anymore, so I go get something to eat. What do you know? They don't take Canadian money, and I have no US on me, since I didn't think I was going to be there for so long. So I find a place that converts it in the airport. I give the girl a $20, she laughs at me! I said I don't need much, just enough for lunch, that is why I am only changing $20. So she gives me back $9.96 US!!!! On a $20!!!! I feaked out. Anyways, what could I do? So I go eat, and wait for the plane. Finally it comes, but we were stuck on the plane for an hour before we could take off.

Anyways, there is this cool Spanish guy next to me, and he's all right. He says hi. So now Im on my way to Mexico. I hope the family checked the flight number and stuff. Oh well, we will see what happens. Anyways, this has definitely been one of the worst days of my life. I reached Dorval airport exactly 12 hours ago, and I'm still far from Mexico! Geez! Could anything else go wrong? Anyways, that is all for now from my end. I'll write more after I meet the family. This should be interesting....
