Thank you for the great work! When I NEED a "dose" of the literiture and don't have a book or IP handy but do have a computer near by I know that I can check here for what I NEED. I have four months clean and NEED access to anything I can lay hands on. I own a basic text, I own a copy of Just for Today, I have a copy of every IP can lay hands on, soon I hope to get a copy of the Step Guide (but I did find a great one on line:). I work steps with a sponsor and attend 5-7 meetings a week. It seems the vast majority of the fellowship that sees this site approves! I would ask of the creators of this site to give credit where the crdit is due though and include with the table of contents a statement about copyright and how to purchase a hard copy of the text. I work on the Net and would be personaly upset if someon took my copyrighted material and didn't even bother to sight me as it's rightfull owner. Let's all do the next right thing! Spread the message, welcome the new comer and $upport the WSO, we need them as much as they need us. Peace and Love!

I was surprised to see all the NA approved literature here. I think that those who utilize this site might well read this note to a local addict here in the Southern California Region of N.A.who decided to appropriate our site logo among other things: Hmmm�. I understand your need to spread the message but there are more appropriate ways of doing this. A home page recovery site is a great idea so long as you keep it to your personal recovery. If you get onto just about any search engine and type in �Narcoti s Anonymous� you would have plenty of official NA sites to choose from. NA has become what it is today due to the unity and perseverance of addicts to follow traditions and concepts. The 12 Traditions came after the 12 Steps because it was needed to kee us focused on the task at hand. In the same manner the 12 Concepts of Service came about so that there was a guiding light for those of us who choose to be of service. These 12 Steps, Traditions, and Concepts are what we have been conversing about�i.e. how to best apply them to reach the addict who still suffers. The reason that NA is what it is today has a great deal to do with money besides the great spiritual presence we all feel. Each meeting donates money to the Area, who in turn donates to the Region, who in turn donates to the World. What does NA World Se vices (NAWS) do anyway with all that loot? They help new areas and regions get started, they hold service conferences all over the world�last year was in the West End Area of the Southern California Region of NA�the next one will be in year 2000 at Carta ena, Columbia I believe. They also have a full time service office open all year round with a lot of volunteer trusted servants and paid special workers. They have translators on staff to translate the NA message into other languages. They also serve t give us a world wide perspective of NA service. If you had the chance to go to the World Service Conference in San Jose this summer you know what I mean. There were about 20,000+ addicts from all over the world there. Where does all that money come from you might ask? It pretty much comes from the sale of NA approved literature although a lot comes from the membership at large through conventions and fund raisers. This region is in fact one of the largest supporters f NA World Service�we donate thousands of dollars each year to help keep carrying the message. The money this region donates will probably never come back directly to benefit us�this is because we are quite self supporting and usually are the ones to sen speakers to talk about service because we do a lot of it here. This is the reason you are able to go to just about any meeting of NA and get pamphlets, books, and step guides. If NAWS didn�t have copyrights on their conference approved literature anybody could make, distribute, and sell it. The net effect of this would be to dilute our ability to carry the message and we would have petty squabbles that would lead us nowhere but insanity. NAWS is very strict about who can and who can�t use our fellowships literature. If NAWS is not vigilant in this area we could open ourselves for a free for all�and who would be the ultimate loser? The addicts who still suffer because there wa no one there to hold the light out in the darkness. The fellowship of NA is greatly involved in the �spreading of the message.� You may not see this as it is not too apparent at the meeting level what goes on in the service structure. Most people don�t have a clue about all the effort and time that goes nto getting one piece of literature on to the table at the meetings. It usually takes 2-3 years to produce one of the IP�s�changes to the Basic Text and other books may take 3-5 years or more. I believe, in the CAR report, there was an item that was app oved that is going to cost the fellowship major bucks and many years of work to get it to the meeting table. Another area that is not too apparent is the Public Information Committee�s�they work tirelessly to spread the message through schools, TV, and r dio�and believe me, the cost to produce a single Public Service Announcement can easily run several hundreds of dollars. The Hospitals and Institutions Committee�s go into jails, prisons, and facilities where the addicts cannot get out to get to a regula meeting. Our Area spends about $300 a month in this endeavor for just literature alone�the region spends about $1500 a month to do the same. Our Area also spends about $550 a month to provide a live addict hot line 24 hours a day. So I hope you can see that while we are worried about �copyrights and ownership� issues it is for good reason�so we can carry an undiluted message to the addict who still suffers. I have been clean for only about 10 � years so I only know a little about ervice work and its impact on the fellowship at large. I can tell you that I have spent many years as a GSR and I am the current Chair of the Website Committee. The reason this was formed was to help �spread the message� in an appropriate official manne that best helps the addict. Love & Hugs, Janice K.

I have been clean since July 14, 1997. There is no N/A in my hometown, so I have been attending A/A and in my mind, substituting the word drugs when they say alcohol. Its nice to finally find some actual literature on line. Literature should be as freely available as possible and not a major profit center for global domination. Sometimes I think NA is dollar centred on God centered. Money has never bought me lasting pe ce of mind. The steps have and they were freely given to me as they were to those who came befor me. Thats the NA way. I can only keep what I have by giving it away and I do as much as possible. It works for me and many others who have been clean a long t me.
