Information and advice from
Podiatrist Tim Stewart on foot pain
Blisters, corns, calluses, ingrown toenails and verruca are some of the painful conditions that can affect the foot. The most common foot complaint, however is heel pain. Podiatrist Tim Stewart says these problems are not something one should just put up with. The formation of corns and callus is due to excessive amounts of friction or footwear pressure occurring during activity. A podiatrist can painlessly remove corns and calluses and advise on measures which can be taken to reduce their reformation. Corns are often mis-diagnosed as verruca, but Tim points out that they are quite different in that verrucae are caused by a virus and consequently can be contagious. Verrucae are best treated by a podiatrist who has a range of options to most effectively treat them. Heel pain and arch pain often results from damage to the structural tissue within the foot.
Certain foot types are more prone to damage. These foot types are involved in a number of other biomechanical injuries within the foot and lower limb including shin splints, knee pain and lower back pain. Stabilisation of the foot and lower limb through use of orthotics (corrective insoles).
A biomechanical assessment by a podiatrist can be very beneficial in control of these problems. Bunions and hammer toes are another common foot problem. The tendency to develop these conditions is hereditary but lifestyle factors can also their development. Choosing a properly fitting and well designed shoe is very important in reducing these problems. Mr Stewart offers expert independent footwear advice to patients, and is available at the Tawa Medical Centre 04 232 7193 and is available for house calls by appointment. 025 261 4729.
