Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: The Controversy
Multiple
Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is still a controversial issue among medical
doctors and clinical ecologists and has yet to be legitimized by the
medical establishment and state medical-insurance
institutions.
Controversy Since MCS has not been
clearly defined and many of its hypotheses are not testable, the American
Medical Association and other medical professional organizations disagree
with the Clinical Ecologists because they don't have the research,
scientific or biological, to prove their beliefs. Other factors that
keep MCS controversial are the Clinical Ecologists' lack scientific
documentation according to established scientific procedures and the use
of experimental treatment and diagnostic procedures.
There are
complex immunological tests and brain scans that appear to show
abnormalities caused by chemical exposure, the medical profession does not
consider this "reliable information." Also there are neuro-psychological
tests given to MCS patients that measure brain function and can show
decreased blood flow to some areas of the brain, according to Dr. Gordon
Baker, a Burien allergist.
Scientifically oriented professionals
suspect that the majority of MCS patients suffer from psychological
disorders such as depression, anxiety reactions, and bodily reactions to
stress. Many of them agree that, although some people are sensitive to one
or a few specific chemicals, there is no general hypersensitivity to
chemicals.
A wide army of names has been associated with MCS.
Besides Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, it can be called Twentieth Century
Disease, Environmental Illness, Environmental Sensitivity, Chemical
Injury, Chemical Aids, Ecologic Illness, Total Immune Disorder Syndrome,
or Total Allergy Syndrome.
Each of these names has specific
implications regarding the underlying cause, mechanism, or manifestations
of the disease. The difficulty in agreeing upon a definition or a name for
this condition has been a major hindrance in achieving scientific
respectability.
What is MCS? Multiple Chemical
Sensitivity is allergic reactions to chemicals that are often not antibody
driven. A person with MCS can not detoxify and eliminate chemicals in his
body because they are entering the body faster than it can eliminate them.
The chemicals then store in the fatty tissues of the body - the heart,
liver, and brain. Allergy & Environmental Sensitivity Support &
Research Association of Australia says MCS is like an allergy, in that
people afflicted react to things that don't bother other people, but the
biological mechanisms are different. [ Overview of our MCS

Definition Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is hard to
define because it can encompass so many variables that are not consistent
in each individual that suffers from the disorder. There is no commonly
accepted definition of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity even though there are
two definitions that are widely accepted by many doctors that have MCS
training and understanding. Dr. Mark Cullen, Yale School of Medicine,
quoted by most Occupational and Environmental doctors, defines MCS as an
acquired disorder characterized by recurrent symptoms, referable to
Multiple organ systems, occurring in response to demonstrable exposure to
many chemically unrelated compounds at doses far below those established
in the general population to cause harmful effects.
Clinical
Ecology, a clinical ecologists' journal, defines Ecologic Illness as a
chronic multi-system disorder, usually polysymptomatic, caused by adverse
reactions to environmental incitants, modified by individual
susceptibility and specific adaptation. The incitants are present in air,
water, food, drugs and our habitat.
To use language that is
understandable to the average person, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is a
chronic condition that is characterized by multiple symptoms, in multiple
organs, affecting multiple senses, and triggered by multiple chemicals. [ Overview of our MCS

Brief History A wide range of new chemicals
were synthesized after World War II and were put into the market place.
Since then thousands of these petroleum based synthetic chemicals are
added to products every year. They are in the household products we use,
in the clothes we wear, in the food we eat, and in the air we breathe.
Most of these chemicals have not been adequately tested for their
potential toxicity and have become troublesome for many. Theron
Randolph, M.D., a Chicago allergist, recognized in the early 1950's that
people were getting sick from their environment. By the 1960's the
government was aware that pollution was the cause of adverse health
affects.
Because the government was wanting to conserve energy in
the early 1970's, it encouraged the construction industry to become more
energy efficient. This led to changing the ventilation requirements needed
to bring fresh air into the new buildings being built. The combination of
the ventilation changes in buildings and the increase in volatile
chemicals being used in manufacturing materials led to what is now called
sick building syndrome.
Medical doctors and scientists are starting
to agree that different people react differently to modern man-made
chemicals and that real progress has been made in defining the condition
and understanding some of its origins.
Many physicians are
most at ease when one kind of germ causes one kind of disease, therefore,
they are not comfortable treating MCS because it encompasses many
unknowns, many causes, and many symptoms.
The next article will
discuss who is afflicted, the causes, triggers, symptoms, and treatment of
MCS.
