My academic career started in faculty of medicine Al-Azhar University. This was after I finished residency in Cairo University hospitals. In al-Azhar I continued progress from clinical demonstrator in dermatology till assistant professor. I was loaned to the ministry of public health in the state of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf. I helped the local authority in establishing a state of the art dermatology service. Life in Qatar was so pleasant and rewarding so that I quit my job in my country after the maximum time allowed for the loan(4 years). Home sickness and the bad feeling of leaving the distinguished academic career in my own country made me apply for a job at the newly started faculty of medicine in al-Minya university.
The faculty of medicine started in al-Minya in1983 and year by year they hired staff according to advancement of junior classes to higher ones. So I was appointed as professor and chairman of dermatology in 1987. At that time there was nobody in the department except 2 rooms and a male nurse. I hired a lecturer and a residentthen another 4 residents. Working together as a great team helped the accomplishment of our up-to-date department of today(see page titled staff)with a staff forming a family of 20 persons.
A word of gratitude had to be mentioned. Professor Maher Mostafa Kamel, Vice University President & former Chairman of Anatomy and the Dean (when I was appointed till he was promoted to the higher office of vice university president in 1992 ) who was behind the progress of our department. His unique personalitymade me accept the hard job in al-Minya and quit a well payed job in the Gulf. He never rejected any logic request for equipment, rooms and staff. His encouragement was always a forward push to all of us.
