QUEEN NEFERTITI

The emblem of the University of Minya is embodied in a shield depicting the disk of Nefertiti to symbolize the ancient Egyptian area, Tel El-Amarna, which lies within the borders of al-Minya region.

Nefertiti is best known for her portrait bust of painted limestone found at Tel El-Amarna. The bust is now in the Berlin Museum. According to the latest research, she is the daughter of an Egyptian family in Upper Egypt.

Nefertiti, queen of Egypt, was the most famous Egyptian queen, cousin and chief wife of the first ruler in history "King Akhnaton" who declared his belief in one god and tended to a new cult in the direction of monotheistic. She became prominent during her husband's reign. As a royal figure of the 18th dynasty, Nefertiti supported her husband's religious revolution.

Amenhotep IV (Akhnaton) ruled Egypt for 26 years during the period 1378 B.C. to 1352 B.C. He succeeded to conquer the wealthy and powerful priesthood of god "Amon" and change the religion to the unique sun god "Aton", believing in its glory and creative energy providing life to everything. He withdrew from Thebes (Luxor), the worship city of "Amon", and founded a new residence and capital for Egypt and called it Achetaton, i.e. Aton in the horizon, (Tel El Amarna in al-Minya Governorate). Therefore, he altered his name to Akhnaton, i.e. Aton is satisfied.

Akhnaton expressed his meditation in composed hymns. His worship of "Aton" was carried out in the open air of the temple court, placing flowers and fruits on the alters. This religion emphasized the individual life, literary, architect and sculpture arts in Egypt.

Nefertiti is thought by some to have adhered to the new cult of the sun god "Aton" even after the king began to compromise with the upholders of the order. She died after loosing favor when the king died. Her eldest daughter and son-in-law, as co-regents, replaced Nefertiti in the royal inscription. Objects belonging to the queen have been found in the northern area of Amarna suggest that the queen may have retired there.
