This page is dedicated to our son, Jonathan, who was born in March of 1997. He was one month premature and was diagnosed as having a congenital kidney defect on his fourth day of life. We are so thankful for the incredible joy and meaning he has brought to our lives. We hope you enjoy this page and find the information enlightening and helpful.

Jonathan's
Story

Jonathan at 1 week
Jonathan was born one month early in March 1997. He suffered from respiratory distress syndrome due to his prematurity and
was transported to the NICU at New England Medical Center. On his
fourth day of life, Jonathan was diagnosed with a congenital kidney defect: bilateral renal dysplasia/hypoplasia. Of course, at that time we had no idea what this meant or what the future held for Jonathan. We were devastated and shocked; we fully expected to have a healthy baby.
The pediatric nephrologist told us that his kidney
function was "very poor" and that the next few days would be critical for Jonathan. His creatinine was high, the reason they decided to scan his kidneys in the first place, and it would need to come down if Jonathan was going to win this fight. We watched it rise slowly over the next few days; not a good sign. His nephrologist told us that it could go as high as 4.5 before we would need to put him on dialysis. It got all the way to 4.1 before it started to turn around.
He was discharged from NEMC after one week and was
transferred to South Shore Hospital to work on his feedings. He was on a g-tube for part of his feedings and he would need to take them all by breast or bottle before he could come home. This was the most frustrating process! All we wanted to do was to get him home and away from the hospital! Finally, they said he could come home. At this time his creatinine was around 3.3 I asked if it could go much lower and they told me no, probably not. They told us to expect him to be on erythropoiten by the end of his first week home. We were thrilled to get him home but still had no idea what the future would hold.
Jonathan is ten months old now and is
continuing to absolutely thrive! He is small and we get a lot of comments about that (HE'S TEN MONTHS OLD?! :) ) but everything else couldn't be better. His creatinine has fallen to 1.1 and is stable. He is nowhere near needing erythropoiten or dialysis treatments. He is crawling and starting to cruise on the furniture. He is babbling and saying "dada", much to the delight of his father!
We had an appointment with the nephrologist this
week and the subject of predicting when his kidneys would fail came up. He said that he really didn't like to predict just because they have been so wrong so many times:) He said, " you just never know with these kids". It used to be important to us to try to predict everything but now we are content to take our lives one month at a time (our blood work schedule:)) and not worry about failing kidneys. You know, there is lots to worry
about with a ten month old and we'll stick to that for a while! Don't get us wrong; of course we believe that knowledge is power or we wouldn't have this site for other parents. All we are trying to say is let the disease take a back seat whenever you can. We still don't know what the future holds but for today everything is good and we are grateful for that.

Growth
and Development
Children with renal problems may have impaired growth. Growth Hormone is now an option for children with chronic renal insufficiency. We have added a parenting community here because it is a great place to learn about development. We will be adding more in the future.

Groups
It is very important to find
support when you have a child with a chronic illness. It is even better
when you can communicate with parents who are going through the same (or
similar) things. We have found great support from the last two links on the page. We highly recommend them.

Caution upon entering here!
We would strongly advise you to discuss any alternative treatments with
your primary physician. Even a simple herb such as Echinacea can
have over 100 compounds in it. We will be adding more sites here
as we find them.
(This link has a listing of plant constituents; all of the common herbs
seem to be here)

Renal
Nutrition
This is an area we are currently
researching so we hope to have a lot more soon. If you have an infant,
and your child is on a special diet, you can call the baby food companies
and get the nutritional contents of their foods (i.e. potassium amounts).

Books
At this time we would recommend
you go to www.amazon.com for an amazing
selection of books. We typed in "kidney disease" and a good sized
list of books came on the screen. We have been assured it is secure
to order from them. The books can be returned if you are not satisfied. Our bookstore is currently under construction!
