These people made great contributions to the world. Some were institutionalized, some commited suicide. Our society in a grand gesture, started a program to clean out mental institutions. This grand event was and still is known as deinstitutionalization. What happened to these former inmates of the "snake pits" of America? Many are homeless and live on the streets. A few end up in prison. I knew one who ended up in prison. The pressures of the lifestyle in prison made him psychotic. In prison terms, he "bugged out." They put him in the "hole" where he died from a drug reaction known as "malignat hyperthermia." His body temperature became so high that his brain was destroyed. His crime? he stole a broken TV set from a neighbor because all he had to do in life was watch TV. There is no TV in the hole. ~Robbie~ "o o" The nazis rounded up the mentally ill during the Hitler regime, and placed us in concentration camps. We were deemed unfit for survival. The food we consumed, it was reasoned, would better serve an Aryan soldier. They could, at least propagate the "master race" and win the war for Germany. What do you think American NeoNazis, skinheads, Aryian nation, and the other fringe groups out there think of us? We scoff at the idea that the radical right could ever gain control of the government. So too did the post WW1 Germans when they saw Hitler and his "brownshirts." I ask you to consider the MaCarthy era of the 1950s here in America. Do you see any parallels? Vote yes on mental health levies and issues. Protect us by supporting mental health. Keep us out of America's modern day concentration camps, the penal system.UK Mentally Ill People Suffer Widespread Discrimination LONDON - XINHUA via Individual Inc. : People with mental health problems in Britain suffer widespread discrimination, abuse and harassment, according to a survey published today by a mental health charity. The survey, based on a sample of 778 people who completed questionairs, says that people with mental disorders are being denied services, forced out of jobs and even made to move home by prejudice, while their children are taunted and bullied. Some 47 percent said they had been abused or harassed in public. They also reported having eggs or stones thrown at them, most often by children, and 14 percent said they had been attacked. Twenty-six percent said they had to move home because of harassment. In the north-west, which produced the worst regional figures, the proportion was 34 percent. In addition, 38 percent reported being teased, harassed or intimidated at work, while 34 percent said they had been forced to resign or were dismissed. Others reported having abusive letters, dog excrement, used condoms and in one case, even burning matches put through their letter boxes. "The level of discrimination revealed in this report is staggering. It confirms our worst fears, that mental ill-health is the most enduring health taboo, yet one of the most commonly experienced health problems," said Judi Clements, director of the charity.I did get a response from a couple who live in the U.K. about the above!
