David
Knopfler
b. 1951. David cemented elder brother
Mark's lead vocals and fretboard solos with subordinate
guitar chords until the heated complications
of their relationship forced Dire Straits to replace
David with Hal Lindes (keyboards) in
September 1982. Within a year came David Knopfler's
first effort as a solo recording artist,
RELEASE (and its single, Soul Kissing), a one-off project
for Peach River Records. Despite a
similar commercial failure with 1984's MADONNA'S
DAUGHTER for Fast Alley, a third independent
label, Making Waves, issued BEHIND THE
LINES and CUT THE WIRE plus attendant
singles like Heart To Heart and Shock Waves. The
continued success of Dire Straits ensured
that these sold enough by association to warrant
release on CD. Nevertheless, the winding
up of Making Waves’ affairs in 1988 left Knopfler still
overshadowed by his brother's more
evident commercial talent.
