Stereotactic Neurosurgery

Stereotacic Neurosurgery is actually a very old concept and it was first proposed by Sir V.Horseley in 1908! Thousands of stereotactic operations were performed around the world in the 1960s and 70s. But, with the coming of microneurosurgery, there was a decline in the interest in Stereotaxy. But, now as the development of microneurosurgery is nearly complete, and because of the availablty of new imaging modalities like the CT scan and MRI, there is a resurgence of interest in this technique

What is Stereotaxy? No, it has nothing to do with music! It is simply a technique which uses sophisticated computer technology to represent the human head in a 3D space. Each point in this space is defined by its coordinates. A "target" is the point where the surgeon wants to reach. A "trajectory" is then defined in such a way that it does not damage important structures of the brain, the coordinates of the target are transferred to the Stereotactic Frame, and Bingo!- we reach the target point to within submillimetre accuracy.
