A pill that will help 13 million people battle their advanced gum disease won approval Thursday from the Food and Drug Administration. The drug, Periostat, was approved for use in patients after the ''scaling and planing'' process to scrape bacteria from below the gum line. ''This therapy is to help them from going downhill'' after the bacteria scraping, says Brian Gallagher, president and CEO of CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer. |
