Date: Sat, 13 Jan 1996 00:23:18 -0500 From: Eaglekeeg@AOL.COM The Disney people are very familiar with Celiac. They pledge to have a GF meal wherever you want to eat (fast food places too!). I recommend the visitors to Disney World ask to speak to the head Chef of the Disney Properties who are very helpful. They will guide you to the most GF friendly restaurants. They are unbelievable with their help!
From: Marie Steele < BMSteele@AOL.COM > Subject: [CELIAC] UK visitor to Florida & Disney For anyone visiting the Disney parks - I e-mailed Disney: WDW_Guest_Communications@wda.disney.com and they sent some useful telephone numbers for the chefs at the parks. You can ring them up and pre-arrange a gluten free meal, apparently they will even use gluten free flour etc if you give them enough warning. - There's a Bakery/health food store in tthe Orlando/Winter Park area called "Clementine's". They have some gluten free stuff. - There's a health food store in Orlando called Chamberlin's Natural Foods and it's at 4960 E. Colonial Drive, in Orlando. this information was gleaned from the website: www.glutenfree.com/florida.htm - One person indicated they eat at the Ouutback Steakhouse in Orlando on Kirkman Road (near Universal Studios) and they order grilled steak plain (no spices), steamed vegetables and a baked potato. As for Fort Lauderdale, I only got one response...from a resident who resides in that area. That person shared that there are 2 restaurants in that county (Broward) whose chefs/owners have been educated about celiac disease and are more than willing to work with you. These places are: - Cafe Arugula in Lighthouse Point/Pompano Beach. This restaurant's chef/owner has a sister who has celiac. This place is highly recommended and they will definitely work with you to give you a pleasurable dining experience. - Pastabilities in Weston. These people will work with you and if you bring your own pasta, they will prepare a GF meal for you.
There is a fine waterfront restaurant in St.Augustine,FL that specializes in Italian-seafood dishes. It is owned by a woman named Joan who is a celiac, so she is fully aware of all the problems we face. She can serve you GF pasta & breads, so if any of you live near or plan on visiting the area, give her a call and I am sure she will do everything possible for you to have an enjoyable lunch or dinner. Her number is (904) 461-6824. Bon Appetit Oops - a few in the group wrote me telling that I forgot to mention the name of the restaurant run by a celiac. The woman's name is Joan and the restaurant is named the Matanzas Innlet Restaurant. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Thanks to whoever recommended Matanza's Innlet restaurant which is 17 miles south of St Augustine, Florida, USA, and 1 mile north of Marineland on highway A1A. The wife (Joannie) in the couple that owns the restaurant has cd and has ensured that all of their soups, sauces, and salad dressings are gf. Even though I hadn't called ahead, I was able to have delicious gf french bread and a great angelhair pasta dish. This was the first time since diagnosis over a year ago that I had eaten bread and pasta in a restaurant - what a treat! If I had called a day or so ahead, I might have even had pizza. Their number is (904) 461-6824. Later in our vacation, we stopped in Deland, Florida. I noticed the Deland Bakery downtown had a sign that said "Health Breads". I didn't expect much but went in. They had freshly baked bread and buns made from millet and brown rice. I am pretty sensitive to gluten dh-wise and don't seem to have trouble with millet. The bread was great. One person couldn't remember an exact name but said it had "Mother" or "Nature" in the name. Approximately the 3000-4000 block of Beneva in a shopping center, visible from the street. I also got the name, address, and phone number of the contact person of the CSA support group down there. If anyone is interested, let me know. Again, thank you for your responses. Chris Cleveland, OH USA There is a huge health food/organic grocery store on the east side of 41 on the road that leads to the beaches. They carry all sorts of gluten free mixes and ready made goods.

Woodland Blvd. DeLand FL 32720 Tel 904-734-7553 Fax 904-734-0404 They bake and ship freshly baked gluten free breads, rolls (hamburger, hot dog & dinner), flats (flat bread or pizza crust), & bagels. All their items include organic millet flour. I'm very sensitive to gluten and have had NO reaction to any of these items. They will ship a minimum of 24 items per order. Each loaf of bread or rolls are counted as part of the minimum 24-item order. [They bake but DO NOT ship GF cookies & muffins, because they break up too much during shipment.] Be sure to specify you want only gluten free (and/or yeast-free) items, as they also make some items with oats or rye flour. All 5 Breads I bought include: organic millet flour baking powder (no yeast) sea salt, water no preservatives (other ingredients listed below) Zucchini Brd: + broccoli, cabbage, carrot, carrot juice Millet Potato Brd: + potato & rice 3 loaves also include brown rice flour: Millet Raisin Brd: + cinnamon Mlllet Garlic & Basil Brd: + garlic & basil Millet Banana Nuts Brd: +Bananas & nuts They also make: Regular Millet Rice bread (with yeast) Millet Rice Special Yeast-Free bread. These are also delicious. I buy these two from Always Natural Health Foods in Beavercreek OH. I was also given a package of new rolls to try: Millet Apple Cinnamon Raisin Rolls -- They are large rolls, braided dough, and very light. They are Wonderful! I have not eaten anything with this texture since becoming gluten free! And they easily (& generously) absorb milk when dunked! Ingredients: organic millet flour, cinnamon, apples, raisins, baking powder, water, sea salt. I WILL order more of these! I hope you feel comfortable trying this bread and passing the info to others who are gluten free. A local health food store may be willing to order and stock these items. I have no interest in this company other than to let everyone know they make gluten free rolls and bread with the best texture and taste I have eaten! Carolyn Randall Fairborn OH

Farmer"Subject: Summary - Florida Restaurants and Food Stores < Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation. > I want to thank everyone who responded with information. It was truly helpful. Sarasota: Two "The Granery" health food stores that carry bread, cookies, and all sorts of gluten free items. Some grocery stores carry gf foods. Sarasota has the Granary Health Food Store. Bradenton (next to Sarasota) has three Good Earth Stores. Lots of Health Food stores everywhere w/plenty to choose from.=20 I visited the Granary at Siesta Keys and was very impress with their selections of gluten free items. They carried bread from the Deland Bakery which I enjoyed very much and brought some of it home with me. The address is 1930 Stickney Point Road. Walton's Health Food Store in Englewood, carries Kinnikinnick products. Marie's Italian Restaurant makes their chicken, veal and sword fish piccata without flour--just sub the veggies for the side of spagetti. Reasonable price. Great food! Neighborhood atmosphere. Shells Seafood Restaurant,Outback Restaurants,Black Angus Restaurants(get steaks plain and eat baked potatoe), Any chinese restaurants) stick with white sauce products and don't use soy sauce or any foods with teryaki or soy sauce used in cooking, bring your own soy sauce (LaChoy is ok). If going to Disney, they are very accommodating, Let the waitress know right away... Hope that helps a little.. Ocala. Any Goodings grocery store will have gluten free cookies, noodles, etc. Also, Mother Earth food stores carry lots of gluten free things but are very expensive. Red Lobster is safe, just talk to them. We've had good luck with Chili's and Cracker Barrel. There is a restaurant about a mile from marineland at Matanza's Inlet that has some gluten free meals. Matanza's Inlet is several miles south of St. Augustine. One of their chefs, Joan, I think, is a celiac and always has gluten free pasta available. If you call ahead, she might even make bread.=20 Grocery stores include Publix, Albertson's Winn-Dixie, Sav-A-Lot, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and Food Lion, all of which can be found in the greater Daytona area (Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, Port Orange, South Daytona, Daytona Beach Shores.) Same stores are also in Orlando, Melbourne, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Palm Coast, Flagler Beach just to mention a few. Some of the very large Publix stores are reported to carry some GF items, but I haven't found one in Daytona - perhaps you'd have better luck in Orlando. Publix has a "greenwise" section which carries some GF foods (some) and they do have some Amy's selections in their frozen food section A small chain of restaurants in Florida The Columbian. Spanish and absolutely delicious. The Deland Bakery is located at 128 N. Woodland Blvd in Deland, Florida if you are in eastern part of Florida.
