ER & Safety

Thousands of children and adolescents each year are rushed to emergency department following serious injury or illness. Approximately 20,000 of these children lose their lives-and another 50,000 permanantly disabled.(1)

It is important that everyone involved-parents, teachers, bystanders, paramedics, nurses, doctors, and specialists- be aware of a child's special needs, both in preparing for and surviving a medical emergency. (2)

Diabetes:

Unfortunately, diabetes doesn't stop when children are in school. Many issues arise when diabetics attend class. Unlike a child without diabetes, these children need free, unrestricted access to water, bathroom and the clinic when needed. Also, the availability of snacks is important.
The parent can give an idea to a child's schedule so that this priviledge is not taken advantage of either.
There is a School Bill of Rights for Diabetes stating the law and rights of a diabetic attending school.
The School's nurse is an advocate in every medical situation. Working with the parent, teacher and child can help make the best education possible.
