Hi, Honey. This will be the last time that I, or anyone else for that matter, will ever post in your guestbook. It was ten years ago today that I lost you. Two or three months afterward I got the idea to create this web site, both as a memorial to you, and to my love for you, as well as a way to further your nutritional work for HIV+ people. Jack Arnold helped me with the technical stuff of actually creating a site, and Chester Myers helped me with the nutritional side of things, including recruiting a Virtual Faculty of experts to answer questions. I did the rest, writing all the text, organizing all the pictures and articles, doing the administrative duties of the site, fielding the questions, responding to visitors. And I posted in this guestbook. Endlessly, it seems, I posted in your guestbook, though really it was mostly on anniversaries of significant dates in our life together. Today, of course, is one of those anniversaries, so I'm writing to tell you one more time how much I love you and miss you and to say goodbye.

It's not goodbye really, of course, it's just that I won't be contacting you in cyberspace anymore. Cyberspace has become like the new heaven,a fictional place where the departed go to live in the minds of those left behind. Well, it's been a useful device for me to feel like I actually am communicating with you. Really, I'm just talking to my own heart, which is where you really live, and that won't change as long as I can draw a breath.

I'm only shutting down the website because it's served its purpose and ten years seems like a natural place to stop. With Chester's passing, the nutritional agenda of the site kind of fell apart, and over time, visitors to the site became more and more infrequent. Plus, new discoveries in nutrition and HIV may have rendered some of the information on the site outdated or invalid. I have no way of knowing about that. Add in the spammers constantly bombarding the guestbook and the fact that I'm about the only who ever posts there anymore, and it just seemed like it was time.

The creating, care and feeding of this web site has meant so much to me, Honey. It was as close a way as I could find to keep your spirit alive and to feel close to you, and in that regard it was a major factor in my dealing with my grief. Saying goodbye to it is like saying goodbye to an old friend, an old love. It's not you, but it's been filling in for you for these ten years, and I'm going to miss it. Of course, I will always have a copy of it on CD and on my computer, so I will still be visiting it from time to time, even though I won't be able to write to you that way anymore. In truth, there is nothing more I can think of to say; I've said it all over and over again. The last words you ever heard from me in real life was when I sang John Denver's "Dreamland Express" to you ten years ago today. At least, I hope you could hear it. So I'll leave you now one more time with those same lyrics that express so well the magic I felt that night we first met. I love you, Jennifer. And I'll always be your Kennebunkport.

Dreamland Express
by John Denver

I caught a ride on the
Dreamland Express last night.
I was sailing on an ocean of blue,
And right there by my side,
much to my surprise, was you.

I said, Come on over here, baby,
let me look in your eyes,
Let me see the very heart of you.
And I couldn't believe it, or conceive
that my dream would come true.

Cause you said, Hey there, sweet daddy,
everything is all right,
You know for miles there's
not a telephone line.
There's not a soul to disturb us,
don't be nervous,
Just come and be mine.

You said, Let me be the end of your rainbow,
Let me be the stars up above.
Let me be the one that you long for, baby,
Let me be the one that you love, oh, oh,
Let me be the one that you love.

But now it's four in the mornin',
honey, I can't sleep.
I can't get you out of my mind.
I keep tossin' and turnin', I'm yearnin'
for the sun to shine.

I'd like to send you a ticket
on the Dreamland Express,
And take you far away with me.
I've got a vision of heaven,
and you're livin' there with me.

Let me be the end of your rainbow,
Let me be the stars up above.
Let me be the one that you long for, baby,
Let me be the one that you love, oh, oh,
Let me be the one that you love.

Let me be the end of your rainbow,
Let me be the stars up above.
Let me be the one that you long for, baby,
Let me be the one that you love, oh, oh,
Let me be the one that you love.

Today you would be 60. The last time we were able to celebrate your birthday, you were 50. A decade has passed, and a lot has happened in that decade. To the world and to me. Nothing more, however, can happen to you. You are 50 forever. And 49, and 36, and 21, and one day old. You are all those ages forever. Time passes and then it stops. For you it has stopped; for me it has not yet stopped. And until it does, I will continue to commemorate all these birthdays and anniversaries that were important to us. They are rituals I perform now to keep your memory alive, for that is all I can do: Cherish the time we had together. I love you. Your Kennebunkport.

It was yesterday. It was yesterday, and I forgot. This is the first time that date has passed without the memory of it surfacing in my head. What does this mean? I guess that the passage of time does do something to one's memory and that the absence of your "livingness" has an inevitable effect. I feel badly that I didn't remember the most memorable day of my life. But I know I shouldn't. Because I know that I do not love you any less. I know you know that too. Bye for now, Honey. Your Kennebunkport.

It was on a sunny day in Vegas 20 years ago today, when the minister asked you if you would take me as your husband and you said, "I do." Then, of course, he asked me. Did I take you for my wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, till death do us part? Instead of "I do", another response bubbled up from somewhere and popped out of my mouth like a cork from a champagne bottle. "Absolutely!" I said. A bigger, more effervescent smile never appeared on your face (and you were the queen of big, effervescent smiles!). And ever after, whenever I used the word "absolutely", however matter-of-factly, you would interrupt me and say, "I love it when you say 'absolutely.'" The love in your eyes when you did that will always be with me. And that smile too. I guess I would be living in denial to say that death did not part us, for in many ways it did. But it will never wrest you from my heart. Never. I love you, Jennifer. Absolutely, I do.

Well, Honey, Patches is on her way to you now too. She was the last of the three Mohicans. We'd been nursing her along with steroid shots for a while, but she took a bad turn last night and this morning. So Carol and I took her to the vet and put her down. I know you would've done the same thing. Like Daisy, she was a game girl. So all three are with you now. You were the one who brought them into our home 15 years ago, and now they're back home with you. Carol was a terrific mommy to them, just as good as you were, and we'll miss them. They were such great companions. Thanks for making me a daddy. I love you, Honey. Your Kennebunkport.

Happy Birthday, Honey. I know you'd be flabbergasted to be 59, but you're frozen in time for me. I have so many pictures of you, some of them from before we even met when you were a sweet young thing of 37. Some of my favorites, actually, are pictures of you when you were a kid, and I find myself wishing I'd known you then, that I'd grown up with you, that you had been my girlfriend always. In a way, you have been my girlfriend always. I can't explain the power of this connection, but it's undeniable. I miss you. Time softens the edges of the acute pain the loss of your physical presence has caused me, but I miss you. I feel your presence anyway. That it's not a physical one is important, but not all important. I treasure the time I had with you, I treasure the memories I entertain now. And I treasure the day you were born. I love you, I love you, I love you. Your Kennebunkport.

Here we are again, Honey. May 24. The night that changed my life. Yours too, of course. Thank God you left your glass slipper there that night at Popcorn's as you raced away in your chariot made out of a pumpkin. And thank God I found it and tracked you down. The slipper fit. Now you've had to go off in a different kind of a chariot, and I don't know if I'll be able to find you this time, Honey. But I've still got the slipper. Can a fairy tale come true twice? I love you, you know I do. Your Kennebunkport.

Now Daisy's with you, too, Honey. She's a game girl and put up with that liver cancer without complaint for a long while, but it was finally time to say goodbye to her. Carol and I are sure going to miss her and will likely be spoiling Patches all that much more now. Eventually, we'll all be with you (even though I don't believe in all that afterlife stuff, I find myself indulging in the language of it -- something comforting about it despite it's implausibility). So now you've got two "sleeping cats", Daisy and Rumples. Hope the purring doesn't keep you awake. Love you, Honey. Your Kennebunkport.

I just got out our "picture book", the one that contains all the photos I put up on the walls of our home after I lost you eight years ago today. I went through every album and envelope of pictures I could find, and I mounted dozens of them. When people walked into that condo, I think they were a little taken aback, but that didn't bother me. I know somehow I was trying to not let you die. Foolish, impossible, but the act of doing that, night after night, cutting and taping and mounting photos, did something for me. It was a way to physicalize my grief; it was a sacred rite for me. I was expressing my love the only way I could right then, and that's exactly what I had to do: Find a way to express my love for you. Anyway, like I said, I just got through looking at all those photos again, now put away in a large portfolio I made. I keep it wrapped up so it won't get dusty and put it behind the "cabbage patch chair" with the Amish pillows you held on to so tightly that time in the airport. Usually, I just take them out one day a year now, today, the day I sang goodbye to you. You are my Dreamland Express, Honey. You always will be. And I'll always be your Kennebunkport. I love you.

I put a rose on your house today. I put it on top of the "615" sign on the front, for all to see. It looks lovely, a full-bloomed vermillion rose that Carol cut for you from her garden, full of life and vibrancy -- just like you, the way you were on this our wedding day 19 years ago, and the way you will always be in my memory and in my heart. I love you, Jennifer. Absolutely, I do.

Rumples is coming to be with you, Honey. What a great cat campanion he has been for these last 14 years, and I remember so well when you brought him home as a kitten. He died today, in my arms, just like you did, so in a way, it was like saying goodbye to you all over again. Daisy and Patches are still here, of course, but the house seems empty without Rumpy. Carol and I are both having a hard time with it. It's probably just mythology, but I have to admit there is some comfort in the idea that you and Rumples are together again in some kind of heaven. I love you, Honey--give Rumples a tummy scratch for me. Your Kennebunkport.

What a happy anniversary this would've been -- 20 years ago tonight that I found you. My heart was not so much "won" as "given", right there, right then. And though it took a little time for its manifestations to be visible, the miracle I'd been praying for happened in a moment, out of time almost. So if it's out of time, what difference does it make that 20 years have gone by? None really, I guess. And it is still a happy anniversary, even though you are not here in the flesh to celebrate it with me. Still, we celebrate it, don't we, Honey? In spirit -- for that is where the whole thing began in the first place. I love you, you love me, but oh my god what I wouldn't give to hold you again and feel what I felt that night 20 years ago when I took you in my arms and we danced. You've been in my arms ever since. I'm never letting you go. Your Kennebunkport.

And I'm keeping it, death not withstanding. As I write this, I'm listening to Dreamland Express, and singing it to you like I did seven years ago today. Because you and I will always be on that train, together, singing off key and headed who knows where. The destination does not matter; it's being with you that I treasure. You're alive in my heart and as bright a light as you ever were. I love you. You are with me. Kennebunkport.

Another anniversary I get to "celebrate" alone, privately, so others don't notice so much how sad this all makes me. I want you with me, Honey. My memories are precious to me and mean a lot, but they do not provide the warmth and comfort that I crave. Nothing can do that but your presence, and you are not present. Oh, Jennifer, I love you, I miss you, I want you back. Hold me like you used to, with that tightness that seemed could never loosen its grip. I'm holding onto you for all I'm worth, and I'm never letting go. I love you, Honeybunch. I love you, I love you, I love you. Be with me.

Hi Huneybunch. It's Thanksgiving Day. Today Carol and I were recalling memorable Thanksgivings we'd had as we drove over to her Aunt Charlotte's. For me, it was that one we spent at Uncle D's place up in the mountains above Nevada City. It was 1993, the year that your mom died and Uncle D invited us up there to spend the weekend with him and his two sons and their families. I remember what a good feeling it was to be up there with them in that cozy house in the woods that D had built. And I remember your being very, very happy. I guess I remember it every Thanksgiving and at other times too. Of course, you know, if it's possible for you to know, that Uncle D has died now too and his house has been sold. But your ashes are still there. I put them round the base of those twin redwood saplings where you had spread your mother's ashes that very Thanksgiving and where D had buried his wife's ashes several years before. I'm so thankful that I had you in my life, Honeybunch, and that in many ways I still do. Thank you for loving me and for letting me love you. I always will, you know. Your Kennebunkport.

Maybe you know this because you were there too. And maybe there is no way for you to know. It was a gorgeous morning, the only clouds were actually forming inside the crater of Haleakala itself. It was brisk, to be sure, a stiff breeze blowing from the south southwest. The Kona winds they call them. The colors were magnificent, changing minute by minute as the sun slowly peeked up over the rim. On the opposite horizon, bands of pink and blue, your colors, painted the sky. Maybe you were there somehow. I used the same blue vase I'd used before to hold your ashes and Carol had done it up with pink and blue ribbon and one of your hair "foo-foos" of the same colors. I said a couple of things, through tears, about how I knew you were not these ashes. They were but the remnant of the physical form we called Jennifer. But the real Jennifer lives in my heart for as long as it beats. And then I flung them high to catch the wind and the light and couldn't help thinking how you would've loved to be parasailing or skydiving into the crater like that if you could. It's funny how we usually look upon things like time and place and supposedly solid matter as the real stuff of life, and things like love and friendship as somehow more ephemeral. What I know now, though, over the nearly three years it's been since your body died, is that just the reverse is true. It's love and friendship that endure and everything else is ephemeral. Love...that's the real stuff of life. And it never turns to ashes. I love you, Honey. I always will. Your Kennebunkport.

It's Christmas again, Honey. And, of course, our anniversary too. It's tough for me, this time of year especially, all the memories of you, how much I love you, how much you enriched my life, how much I want to see your smiling face again. The love never dies, though. I feel it every day but wait for occasions like this to post something about it here. The cats are all fine, except for Daisy's floppy ear. But she doesn't seem to mind it. I still call her "Ms. Ears". Rumples is still his egocentric self and Patches is as jealous of affection visited upon the others as ever. And she still has a bit of a weight problem. Carol is an extremely loving mother to them in your stead. We're off to Maui tomorrow and we're going to scatter the remainder of your ashes from atop Haleakala at dawn of the real new millennium, January 1, 2001. I know you'd like that; you loved Maui so and always talked about our retiring there. I guess this is the closest I can came to delivering on that wish. I love you, Honey, and I always will. Your Kennebunkport.

When I lived in the Los Angeles area I attended several of Jennifer's presentaions on nutrition. She was an informative and entertaining speaker and I always left feeling empowered and informed. What a wonderful memorial to Jennifer you have created! I was shocked and saddened when I learned that Jennifer was no longer with us. I would drive to LA to hear her speak and always went to her lectures in Long Beach. Once I took several friends and we had an individual consultation with Jennifer in LA. Jennifer was right up there with Martin Delaney (head of Project Inform) when it came to "must see" speakers on HIV/AIDS. What an amazing, loving and truly giving person. Myself and the entire HIV/AIDS community share your loss. Thanks again for the wonderful information on the site and for keeping Jennifer's work alive.

I had no idea when I sent a request for information in the Bay area that Jennifer passed on. I have the worst memory in the world. I met Jennifer once for a session on diet when I was newly diagnosed with HIV. She really must of made an impression on me. never remember names but just recently I started treatment and my diet is out of control. After ten years her name popped in my head so I typed her name in a search engine and this site was the first one to pop up. I am in tears now. I am glad that this ite is here and will keep coming back. The one time I met jennifer she had a stray kitten she was caring for in her office when I met her. Did she ever find a home for that kitten or did she keep it? Thank you again.

Your birthday, Honey. No rituals today, no dinner at the North Woods Inn, no pilfered shot glass. I could have chosen to make an annual ritual of this, but something tells me not to. I don't want your birthday to become something that somewhere down the road, after years of going to the North Woods, for example, one can't or won't or just plain doesn't feel like it. That's an empty ritual. So one of these birthdays we'll all go again, not as a "have-to" to stave off some misplaced guilt for breaking the string, but because we like a serving of gravy bread every once in a while just like you did. And we'll order a gin and tonic for you too. But today, I'm expressing my love for you, like I do everyday, by living the new chapters of my life as best I c n, even as I treasure and re-read the old. That is no empty ritual. That's just the expression of a heart that's full. I love you... your Kennebunkport.

Chester Meyers was a man of brillance, and dedication with a warm big heart. His sunny predisposition and laughter were an addition to his charisma. He was always accessible and helpful to people. His knowledge was astounding. Chester's death, for me is a personal loss, and in addition, a huge loss to the HIV community especialy for people living with HIV/AIDS. His contribution to the field of nutrition is unparalleled. His drive to push nutrition to the forefront of HIV management saved many lives. His sharing and knowledge will not and cannot be replaced by anyone. His presence and wisdom will be immensely missed by many in the country.

Jennifer: If ever there were credence given the notion that style is more in the way something is worn than in what is worn, it was done when I set one of your chapeaux on my head. Can't quite carry it off. I do occasionally wear one of your "foo-foos, which I might sport for another month or two before someone tears the flowered clip out of my hair in disapproval that so old a crow as I would be foolish enough to adorn graying locks with posies. Your sweet man insists I'll never be too old for such affectations; I suspect he encourages me as you're a bit closer so long as we all have, use and cherish your things. Ken also gave me your silver (well, it's silver in color) watch, which I wear now and again just to say hello. I'll wear it tomorrow. J.

Happy Birthday, Honey. Hard to believe another year has past. Carol, Mary, and I went to the North Woods Inn tonight to honor your birthday, just like we always used to do when you were still here. We had a place set for you, ordered you your usual beverage, and we each drank from it. Kept the shot glass too. So, I'm supposing you know somehow that our house went on the market today with an open house. And we got a solid offer at full price. The very first day. I can only interpret this as a sign that you know what I'm doing and that it's okay with you. I've become a bit of a believer in signs these days, I guess. As I've said before, the one place where I know you still exist is in my heart. That has always been our real home anyway and always will be. I love you, Honey. Always will. Your Kennebunkpor ...

The weirdest things keep happening. I found this page looking for the lyrics to Forest Lawn, by Tom Paxton. It's an old favorite of mine and I had lost the album and the notes for the song. I am an amateur musician and had lost my entire 'FakeBook'. A binder with the lyrics of all the songs I love to sing, if only to myself. I am in the process of trying to rebuild it, and it's been sites such as this that have been most useful. 'Peoples is peoples' as the man said, and I must say, it's nice to know that it's still true in this day and age... Hugs and Wicked Kisses!

Dear Jennifer - I spent the day with you today. Maybe you already know that, and maybe the only "you" that's left to me is the one in my heart. Many people have beliefs about how all that stuff works: heaven, angels, reincarnation. Some believe that after death, it's just nothingness, zip, nada. I don't know what happens. I only know I spent the day with the Jennifer who lives in my heart. And just as I did one year ago today, I sang "Dreamland Express" to you. And just as badly. But it's our song. And I sang it for me as much as for you. Maybe all these little rituals I perform now are really for me. That's another thing I don't fully know. But I'll continue doing them anyway...for myself to be sure...but also for you...just in case you really can hear me sing my love to you. However off-key. I will love you forever, Honey. Hi, I am a self taught nutritionist and have studied all of the alternative therapies and there are some great and simple things people can do and our biggest barrier is "lack of knowledge". I will share your web site with others who are looking for nutritional answers. I am a born-again Christian who use to walk in the ways of new-age thinking, but since the Lord Jesus Christ has come into my life, I have been given greater understanding of wisdom of the temple He created. God is a good God and a God of order. He sent His Son for our healing, but for lack of knowledge natural laws of health are transgressed and thus self-destruction. God's plan is so simple and so easy, it is the devil who is complicated and tries to make it seem hard or impossible to do what is right or what is best for ourselves. Our heavenly Father gives us plenty of grace to do all things in Him. God Bless You and May His wisdom guide you.

I may be able to help out and provide the supplements that she, so unselfishly, provided cheaply, for all of us. Jennifer always made a point in encouraging many of us to use supplements and provided them at afforable prices. I am alive, healthy, happy and well in no small part thanks to Jennifer. If there is a way you can forward my love to her, please do so. Thank you for putting her on the net.

Ken, your beautiful, funny and brilliant website has brought Jennifer back into my life and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. She was such a bright star and I treasure our friendship that began as we studied at UCLA's School of Public Health and after became close colleagues through our work at The Wellness Community and the American Cancer Society. I am grateful to have known her and thank you for providing this wonderful resource. Warmly, Carolyn

My Dearest Jennifer -- Six months ago today, I had to say goodbye to you. I miss you terribly. I can't touch you anymore, or see or hear or taste you. You are beyond my senses. But you will always be alive in my head and in my heart. I will always have your glass slipper and it will always fit. I love you, Your Kennebunkport

Hi! I am an advocate for persons living with HIV/AIDS. As part of my job I assist people in trying to access more monies from the Ministry of Human Resources(Welfare) in order to purchase more nutritional foods and vitamins. Ken, you have done a beautiful job with this tribute to Jennifer. When I began receiving my subscription of "A & U" magazine, Jennifer's column was the most informative and entertaining part of the magazine. I always looked forward to the information that she shared, using her wonderful humor and gift for writing. I am a registerd nurse and I've worked with HIV individuals, also have someone HIV infected in my family. Her work was so important and it will never be forgotten. God bless you for carrying on that work and for sharing the special love story that you and Jennifer had. Also bless her friends for assisting in the efforts to carry on her work.

Hi Ken, I had no idea and I'm very sorry. Jennifer went through so much physical pain in her life, yet she had SO MUCH energy--she was such an inspiration to all of us. I had no idea she was sick or that she'd died. Do you know yet what the problem was? She always seemed so vital when we spoke. You wrote a lovely eulogy. You two were very lucky to find one another. All the best - Frances

Jennifer "was a keystone in an arch whose other stones were other lives. If a keystone trembles, the arch will carry the warning along its entire curve; then, if the keystone is crushed, the arch will fall, leaving its lesser stones heaped close together, though for a while, without design. Jennifer's death left some lives without design, but they will be rebuilt again, as lives and stones are, into other patterns." ...borrowed from Beryl Markham's "West With The Night"
