Diabetes mellitus..a plague of Mankind..It is surely a devastating state to be told that you or your loved one has diabetes. Its long term effects are well known. Many know the end result but unfortunately few know the extent that medical science has ventured to help us control this. This brings me to my personal experience with a patient during my clerkship year in Canada..A perfect child brought in with complaints of stomach pain and a subtle symptom of poor bladder control. One look at this child, you would notice nothing..But returning lab results would soon change the lives of this family forever..Emotions run wild..Questions are darted at you in all directions..but the bottom line question remains..."What is diabetes??"..
Diabetes is a treatable condition but for a young child and the trauma of having to take so many needles a day can take its toll especially on parents untrained in this..Here the saying "being cruel to be kind"..is most appropriate..
But for the meantime, the family of this new diabetic will have to sit down and absorb the huge information load..the child may not understand it for now...but soon he will.. This section is dedicated to all those sufering from diabetes.. I do accept any queries about the disease..so e-mail me and I will personally reply..
..But soon he will grow up encompassing everything as his lifestyle..He will notice his uniqueness from others..both his limitations and his strenghts....Yes his strengths..What can that be??...many would ask.
Dicipline..a life of a diabetic on treatment is not to be overlooked...fixed meals and mealtimes...carefully monitored activity level..and ever state of preparedness..A child diabetic can grow to achieve what others can and can lead a "normal" life.
I hope to include more links soon and I hope that in this age information will not be that far away..
