Appomattox
This was the Army of Northern Virginia's final battle. Trying to reach his army's supplies located at Lynchburg, Lee set up a battle line of Fitzhugh Lee's cavalry and Gordon's corps. He needed to do this to escape Yankee pincers. He was making Phillip Sheridan's cavalry fall back but to no avail. Union infantry came up and stopped the Confederates' advance.
That day, Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Though it was said to be the sadest day of Lee's life, Grant was very fair in terms of Lee's surrender. Including, giving rations to all the starving men of the Army of Northern Virginia. Though this was only a surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, it pretty much signaled the end of the war.
