Sharpsburg


Lee's first invasion of the North(September 17). Hooker's corps attacked General Lee's left. Bloody, bloody fighting went on in the cornfield and around the Dunkard Church. Across Antietam Creek went the famous Burnside Bridge. Here Ambrose E. Burnside tried desperatly to cross the creek. Confederate sharpshooters and a force of 500 Georgians held off Burnsides brigade for three hours. The Georgians fell back after running out of ammunition. Due to high casualties, Lee withdrew to Virginia. Burnside was about to attack Lee and cripple or defeat the Confederacy when A.P. Hill's division swept in from Harper's Ferry and held the Yankees back.
