Last month I read on an italian magazine a public poll about nudity. They asked 600 people (over 18) few questions and I would like to talk about two of them. Let's see the first:
Complete nudity for you is...
a form of exhibitionism | 17.1% |
a morally unacceptable practice | 11,3% |
an action that offends the decency | 11,7% |
an unacceptable action in front of children | 29,6% |
a choice like others | 17,8% |
a way to get better tan | 2,3% |
coming back to nature | 6,2% |
Don't know, don't answer. | 4,0% |
So nearly 2 italians on 3 think that our body is a disgrace: we better have to learn to born already clothed! Fortunately someone (17,8%) tolerate my naturist choice. Thank you :-)
Anyway what really put me down is this about 30% that think nudity is something wrong in front of children. What kind of nudity are they thinking about? Do they know that nudity is not necessarely sexual? I guess noone told them, but they've never tried to remember their childhood.
When I was between 9 and 12 I used to take long walks on the beach. Sometimes I saw children, also over 6, playing on the sand and tanning with no bathing suit. I envied them because I couldn't do it as I was too old. But the positive thing was that I knew the difference between males and females. On my side till 12 I've always changed my wet bathing suit just standing behind a deck-chair (not really always). Then I was told I had to cover with my bath-robe. I guess I took some showers with my mum too, but what the hell it was so natural! So I have to thank my parents if I'm not ashamed of my body.
Let's see the second question:
Do you sunbathe in the nude?
Often | 0,7% |
Sometime | 2,7% |
Rarely | 5,6% |
Never | 90,8% |
Don't know, don't answer | 0,2% |
So very few italians take off their swimming suits. It makes me laugh because in such a warm and full of coasts country naturism should be widespread. Is the North Europe countries instead, where the air is cold and so the sea, that people undress unaffectedly. On the magazine I read that italian people do not like to undress because they fear the opinion of the others. Are we so insicure and intolerant?
