Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is the addition of pressure to the environment in which a person is breathing pure oxygen. The second law of thermodynamics states that a mass of any element will move from an area of high concentration or energy to one of low concentration or energy. This leads to the Idea behind HBOT if we super saturate the blood with oxygen to transport it through the arteries, veins and capillaries to the damaged tissue at a cellular level, it will readily be given off to the cells and aid in the healing of the damaged area. Blood consists of two major components. The Hemoglobin which has a high affinity for oxygen, and plasma which has a high affinity for carbon dioxide. Hemoglobin, also known as red cells, consists of a non-nucleated molecule of mostly iron, pigment and oxygen. The iron in this biconvex ovoid readily bonds with oxygen and is carried throughout the body in a fluid called plasma which mostly consists of water. The hemoglobin' two iron atoms each combine with two oxygen atoms as they pass through the alveoli in the lungs. They are then pumped through the body where they eventually pass through the capillaries, which is in places only one cell thick. Many of these cells are pressed through smaller than a blood cell diameter capillary where their oxygen is passed through the endothelium (vessel wall) in an osmotic process. The endothelium is impermeable to blood cells but not the oxygen. The plasma can also pick up the expended carbon dioxide, which is formed in the cells as a by-product of using the oxygen to do their work. This carbon dioxide is picked up here and passed by the plasma back into the lungs and expelled through the alveoli. The plasma is also used to carry the white blood cells that fight disease and infection. Plasma is responsible for transporting other fluid products throughout the body. Through the use of HBOT the plasma content of the blood can even carry enough oxygen into the capillaries to provide the metabolic needs of the body. The extra concentration of oxygen will be readily given off to the surrounding cells that will then be stimulated to generate new growth. Through HBOT the plasma can be used to carry the oxygen into these damaged areas where the bad tissue will be broken down in the regenerated cells and sloughed off into the plasma.
