Astrology has not attained the status of scientific discipline yet. But I
find it very logical and scientific field. Astrology is based on Astronomy.
Please refer to my article on Astronomy for further details about it. The
ancient Hindus always regarded Astrology and Astronomy as synonymous so that a
bad astronomer was also considered a bad astrologer. If you are not good at
astronomy or mathematics don't be disheartened as now a day's horoscope can be
made by computer.
Studying astrology is not a easy task, but if you should try it as it will
open a new horizon to you. This article is small so please forgive me for
omitting many details.
Some Basics
1. Zodiac
Zodiac is a broad band or belt in the sky extending 9 degrees on either
side of ecliptic. In order to measure a point is established which is known as
first point of Aries. The zodiac revolves once in a day on its axis from east
to west. The ecliptic is divided into 12 equal compartments-
Signs of Zodiac, from Aries to Pisces each of 30 degrees. ( Further division 1
degree = 60 min., 1min = 60 sec so total extent of zodiac is 21,600 min. or
129,600 sec. )
2. Constellations
The eciliptic is marked by 27 constellations or "Nakshatras" also known as
lunar mansions. Each constellation contains 4 quarters or "Pada" and is equal
to 3 1/3 degree of celestial arc so there are 108 pada in the zodiac. and each
constellation is of 13 degree 20 min. of hte arc. To make it simple:
Zodaic = 12 signs (each 30 degree) =27 constellations
or nakshatras ( each 13 degree 20 min.)

What is your sign ? To know your Sun Sign used for Western calculations and
reading your future in the newspapers. You need to know only your Birth Day as
Zodiac names were given when first degree of that sign is at the first day at
the eastern horizon. To make it simple it is almost fixed days. Sun sign
begins from 21-25th of March for Aries.
But to calculate Your Moon Sign or "Rashi" you will need to know your birth
time and place as well.
2. Planets
7 important 1. Sun, 2. Moon, 3. Mars, 4. Mercury, 5. Jupiter, 6. Venus, 7.
Saturn. ( also minor ones Pluto, Neptune, Uranus)
2 nodes, in hindu astrology known as Rahu and Ketu
3. Type of Signs
Movable Signs: 1,4,7,10 Fixed Signs: 2,5,8,11 Common
Signs: 3,6,9,12 ( mnemonic 3*1,2,3,4).
Then Signs can also be divided as ODD and EVEN number.
4. Horoscope
There are 3 types of horoscopes mainly Western, North Indian, South Indian.
I'll mainly discuss North Indian Chart here.
Horoscope is divided into 12 houses 1st house is Lagna or Ascendent ( At
eastern horizon rising ) and then in sequence anti-clockwise. In example given
above Lagna ( i.e. in First House or Ascendent) is Leo numbered 5 and Mars is
situated in it. In 11th house Gemini there are 3 palnets Venus, Mercury, and
Saturn.
To make a horoscope you will need an Ephemeris or "Panchang".
In my opinion now Computer is a better choice. Among horoscope making
softwares Leo 99 is the best and its calculations are precise but it is
costly. But they have got a web site where you can make basic horoscope free.

You will need your Birth Day, Birth Time and Birth Place to make a
horoscope.
5. Predictions
Now making a horoscope is pure maths but predicting is another matter all
together. One need to have knowledge as well as experience. Predection depends
upon some princples. There are various methods deviesed by ancient Indian
Rishis most bear their name like Parashar, Brigu, Bhargava, Garg etc. There is
also one which calcultes by sublord of nakshatra ( known as K.P. system).
12 Houses having 12 Zodiac Signs make horoscope. In it planets are
dispersed. 12 houses having 12 signs make 144 combinations but if you will
consider degrees and planets there are too many combinations.

Different Planets in different signs and houses gives different results.
Vinshmottori Dasa of planet is quite accurate in predicting the results of
respective planets.
