History

The Baton Rouge Chapter of AORN Inc. was formed in 1966, and has developed into a respected nursing organization for perioperative nurses in the Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. The name, AORN of Baton Rouge, is familiar to other nurses and nursing organizations in our community. That recognition did not come completely from our national organization, but from past and current members whose work in perioperative nursing is visible to other professionals.

The first president of the Baton Rouge chapter was Alma Lu Harding, and the presidency was originally for a 2-year term. Our chapter celebrated its first OR Nurse Day on, November 14, 1979. Our chapter's policy and procedure manual was developed in 1988, which added a more formal structure to our organization. The first CEU program at a regular monthly meeting was during the presidency of Pat Pittman in 1988. We began the one-day seminars for CEU's in the early 1990's and these have been very successful for the chapter.

Members of this chapter have participated on a national level through research, as officers, committee members, developing poster's for Congress, authoring articles for the national journal and being congress presenters and moderators.

We have had continuous increase in the number of CNOR's in our chapter since Denise Fortenberry became the first member to achieve this status in 1979. We know have 11 CRNFA's in our chapter. Janine Hopper was the first with this recognition.

We now have a newsletter mailed to all the membership monthly. We have one of our members serving as President-Elect of our National Organization for this year and will take over the duties of President in April of 2001.
