Oasis Soccer League.
asis Soccer League has been create as a an alternative after school to kids and teens. In the league are working volunteer coaches and organizers who have as a goal to serve to kids and teens from our commnity.
Oasis is located in Valley Outreach Center at El Mesias Church in Pacoima. In this place, the church community provide us a place to play. Mario Estrada, Jose Mexicanos, Mario Quinones y Jaime Cardoso cleaned the field. de la preparacion del terreno. Quitaron ramas, basura, espinas, etc. que ahi habia. Fast Tournament
On March 1 and 8, Oasis organized a fast tournament with the participation of 4 teams: Galaxy and Tampa Bay (coach: Mario Estrada), Atletico Nacional (coach: Jose Mexicanos) and El Mesias (coach: Jaime Cardoso).
During the tournament, oasis provided information about the risks of tobacco use and second hand smoke, and we emphasized that tobacco and soccer are two activities that do not go hand in hand.
Aproximatly 260 people participed in this event (110 the first Sunday and 150 the second).
The three teams with the best scores received trophies. The winners were:
First place: Atletico Nacional
Second place: Tampa Bay
Third place: El Mesias
The fifty players who participated in the tournament receive medals. In addition, Oasis gave trhophies and prizes to the best players and most disciplined kids. These players received special recognition:
Best (goleador): Alberto Rovelo
Best golie: Ulisses Mejicanos
Most disciplined players: Vanessa Herrea, Antonio Estrada, Geovan Escobar and Victor Piedra.
An Anti-tobacco Tournamenthe tournament was a good opportunity to provide players and their parents with information about the risks of tobacco use. In the second Sunday, Mission City organized an Anti-tobaco Forum. students from San Fernando High School
provided tobacco information related. They also did a survey on the use of tobacco.
So parents and players received information and educational materials about the chemical substances contained in cigarretes, second hand smoke (ETS), strategies used by tobacco companies to sell their product, and the new regulations on tobacco.
Girls and Young Women Players
During the tournament, women played an important role. Congratulation to all the girls and young women who participanted in this tournament. They are:
Vanessa Herrera, Magdalena Hernandez, Vanessa Farias, Cryseida Martinez, Jenifer Escamilla and Michelle Escamilla.
Anti-tobacco Program
On November 1997, the Oasis soccer League presented to MAHEC-Latino Coalition, an anti-tobacco project. Our proposal was accepted and from January to March we implemented classes and an anti-tobacco event with more that 100 participants.

Mahec/Latino Coalition: Oasis is developing an anti-tobacco program thanks to the support of these Latino organizations.
A New Tournament
Oasis is planning a new tournament after the rains subside. Meanwhile, we are organizing games and training sessions.
