OASIS SOCCER LEAGUE
A Smoke Free League
Thanks to LA Link minigrant, from September to November 1998, Oasis Soccer League organized an anti-tobacco soccer tournament. Around 80 kids and adolescents, 200 parents, 6 volunteer coaches and 10 adolescent volunteers participated in the tournament. Oasis posted in the soccer field 2 anti-tobacco banners sponsor by LA Link. During the tournaments Oasis developed a smoke-free policy and a pledge which was signed by the players. In addition, Oasis developed classes for players and parents regarding the risks of tobacco use and second hand smoke. The players also participated in an anti-tobacco contest. On the play offs, Oasis and other agencies organized a health fair. There were a couple of booths with information on tobacco use.
Oasis Soccer League also organized a lightning soccer tournament with the support of Mission City Community Network, Pueblo & Salud Inc. and El Mesias UMC. Around 200 people participated in this event. Kids and youth took anti-tobacco classes, watched anti-tobacco videos and, of course, played soccer. Oasis distributed brochures and posted the banners sponsored by LA Link.
In November, Oasis participated in the San Fernando Council Meeting. There we discussed the possible implementation of a regulation regarding tobacco/alcohol advertising and tobacco self displays. During the meeting, Oasis players and their parent showed 2 anti-tobacco banners which were sponsors by LA Link.
Oasis soccer League made three issues of the Oasis Newsletter. These were distributed to our players and their parents. The newsletters contained information on tobacco use. In addition, Oasis distributed 60 caps/T-shirts and 300 stickers to players, parents and fans.
Due to LA Link's support Oasis Soccer League was able to develop these activities. Players, parents and coaches thank you for this support.
